A MAN, who bought counterfeit designer bags, belts and accessories in China for his boutique in Indonesia, was fined $33,800 for bringing them into Singapore. A district court heard on Thursday that an Immigration and Checkpoints Authority officer became suspicious at the size of the luggage carried by Victor Chiang Hong Joon, when he arrived here at 1.30am on June 25 last year. A check of his bags revealed 173 items, which were found to be fakes. These included wallets, handbags and belts bearing the brand names of Armani, Burberry, Coach, Chanel, Fendi, Ferragamo, Gucci, Guess and Louis Vuitton.
There were also Hello Kitty watches, calculators and hair clips, as well as another 560 unbranded items. Chiang, a Singaporean, pleaded guilty to seven charges of importing counterfeits for the purpose of trade. District Judge Jasvender Kaur took 24 other charges into consideration when passing sentence. The maximum punishment is five years in jail and a $100,000 fine on each charge. The counterfeit items were ordered to be destroyed while the unbranded items are to be returned to Chiang.
