- Singapore confirmed on Wednesday it would cut off internet access for government work stations within a year for security reasons, a surprise move in one of the world’s most wired countries.

The decision will not disrupt government operations, the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) said after local daily The Straits Times reported that some 100,000 computers would be affected.

“We have started to separate internet access from the work stations of a selected group of public service officers, and will do so for the rest of the public service officers progressively over a one-year period,” the IDA said in a written reply.

Singapore has world’s fastest peak internet connection speeds but No 2 Hong Kong has higher rate of broadband adoption

Industry sources said the measure was aimed at preventing cyberattacks as well as the spread of malware that might enter the government email network thought internet-enabled work stations.

Singapore is one of the world’s most internet-savvy societies, offering broadband speeds envied by many.

A wide range of government services are available online, including registering for marriage, filing complaints to the police and video consultations with doctors.

Government services will not be disrupted by the security measures, sources familiar with the plan said.

The Straits Times said public servants would still have access to the internet on their personal devices such as tablets and smartphones.

Dedicated internet-linked terminals will be issued to civil servants who need them for work, the newspaper added. The IDA said the government regularly reviews measures to make its network more secure. “There are alternatives for Internet access and the work that officers need to do, does not change.”

Singapore announced in 2014 it was stepping up IT security measures following attacks on a section of the prime minister’s website, as well the website of the presidential residence.

Something very significant may had happened to force such a drastic ban across the civil service.

Instead of a smart nation target, the government has, in a stroke, pushed back civil service into a cage within itself. Sort of back to paper memo pushing period, this directive contradicts smart nation philosophy.

Any scoop what cause such a drastic back-tracking to cut off and tightly control the civil service?

going back to the dinosaur age.....must be they are tired of government officials and civil serpeants posting on facebook, posting middle fingers, shooting their mouths off and embarassing themselves.apparently PAP is too retarded to handle the internet age or any modern age after the 19th century for the matter of fact......better we go back to the pre industrial age,or qing dynasty or barbarian ages.

one key has been in use for so long and for you to have difficulty even using this device shows how stupid you are.

Fyi devices of such a nature are also in use for facebook, gmail + hotmail even though they don't specifically use onekey but the principle is the same that is an app that produces a code that one has to key in after he has entered his password if not an sms to his phone for the code. This is for security reasons obviously.

i have difficulty using it because i cant even fucking apply for it.....apparently i need a pin mailer which they may or may not have sent me months ago and apparently everything in this country functions by snail mail and it will be two weeks before i hear their response or communicae before i can even begin my application process which i already started weeks ago thru my broker and it took them weeks to tell me why my application failed because everything has to be done thru snail mail,u can get a simple fucking pin or password reset thru ur email or phone number.

yes yes i have tokens and authenticators for everything bank, stock brokers, smartphones, google, steam, games, apps etc etc......

it's a token for an ipsec vpn log-in, which is secure enough for shitizens. i think it's a good idea for some basic protection, rather than leaving it wide open. this must have cum about from much prodding and doomsday sales pitches from doomsayer internet security companies in sg with sexy aunties as salespersons. in sg info-tech sales, sexpertise sells more than real expertise.

i dont trust any Singaporean internet security solutions company, looks cheap as shit and looks like nobody in the world wants to use them,so they went the route of becoming one of PAP GLC crony companies and leeching on as many sg companies as possible.shame on you onekey.
