I always wonder why the govt census classify paper burning practitioners as taoists. If you asked anyone of them in Chinese very very few would say they practise 道 Dao or 道教 Dao Jiao. Most would say they pray to ancestors or generally pray to 'gods'.

You're right. Ancestor worship is a bastardized, peasantized version of Dao, which is one of the most liberating spiritual philosophies in the world, on a par with Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta. BTW, Laozi was born in the same century as three other great teacher-philosophers – Confucius, Gautama & Zoroaster – the Golden Century which saw the greatest spiritual flowering in human history.

Sad that people think that Dao is about burning joss paper and praying to ancestors. It's like associating Christianity with Christmas turkey and log cake.

it's has nothing to do with taoism. it is kiasuism and kiasism. also kiakuism. typical sinkies traits which is why the economy is crap and the future is shit when people behave like shits and like some idiots. even Taiwan and HK has outlaw open burning. in malaysia they do not burn on such a large scale. no such things in thailand or vietnam. only in local crap hokkien infested place line singapore and penang do they practise such crap superstitious beliefs. end up most of these believers becoming uber/grab/taxi drivers and loan sharks. they can jolly well burn incense in thier ass and inside their flats or houses but why do outside and pollute the environment and force otehrs to breathe in such crap poisons. no wonder the indons must be laughing when the haze season somes. full of bullshit these pseudo taoists. Karma would dictate that these burners would get all sorts of crap diseases and bad luck for themselves and their children. really damn selfish bastard idiots.

Hmm...no wonder, when I go Taiwan or HK...I do not see people burning incense papers etc...on the streets, only at Temples; but here, any given day, other than the 7th month, it is common to see people, lighting up incense papers with candles & food offering, littering the grass patch, over Inspection Covers for the sewers or Telecoms etc., over slated drain grills & onto the drains....& yet this blatant littering, NEA close an eye. You throw your drink containers on the grass patch, grass, on the IC etc....NEA "CATCHERS" will issue you a 'thank you note" ( summons) for....$250 or $300...you don't pay, you attend court.

Next time, these "catches" nab you.....you just say...you are making an offering! ( not to the person catching you, of course).

One thing, year after year...I try to understand...why can't the burning, be a collective thing? say for example, in a precinct..those who believe in such things....in a furnace, collectively burn in one place?. TC place metal drums burners all over the place...yet, year after year...you see people, singularly on their own....burn at the side, with their offerings littering the place....even under people's windows...with the cinder blown by the wind drifting...sometimes into people's home...that can cause a fire!.

Why can't these people....collectively contribute to a collective fund & burn at one location in a precinct? One thing I give credit to is, the TC these days, do a admirable job of cleaning up....On the 1st day of the seventh month....these people started burning whatever all over the place, scattering offerings, incense papers, candles etc...all over the place....next day, the TC cleaned them all up....that's a marvel...in normal years...weeks after the burnings....you still have to wade through scattered incense papers, joss sticks remnants sticking out of the grass, melted wax, half burnt candles...food offerings etc...recently, they all were cleaned up.

Why question is still...why can't the people, get together & BURN THEIR OFFERINGS, OFFER & PRAY, all in one PLACE, rather than in every nook & crannies, on top of I.C.'s.... all over the place??

You know how Long it took to 'educate' those morons to stop suka suka burning at the sidewalks and grass patches? I think finally have to impose hefty fines to make them stop and do it at the bins.
Be it Taoism or what. This is a another backward vile chink custom that should be banned. Or restrict them to burning inside their own houses since they like to smell smoke so much.
