Intelligence Ministry identifies CIA network in Iran, region
TEHRAN, Apr. 19 (MNA) – Iran’s intelligence forces have managed to discover a CIA’s espionage network in the country and in the region, said Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi on Friday.
“In a complicated process against the US Central Intelligence Agency, its espionage network was identified with 290 spies in different countries, including Iran,” he said, adding that the information was offered to friend countries which led to arrest of CIA agents.
He made the remarks before the start of Tehran’s Friday prayers while briefing the nation about achievements of Intelligence Ministry.
The forces have also given a similar blow to UK's MI6, he highlighted, noting that details of both these operations will be announced soon.
Alavi went on to say that dozens of spies who had been working in the country’s sensitive sections have been identified and arrested.
In the past [Iranian calendar] year 1397 (March 2018-March 2019), intelligence forces have dismantled 114 Takfiri terrorist teams, 116 circles related to MKO, 44 anti-Revolution teams, and 380 drug smuggling bands, he added.
Furthermore, the ministry has neutralized 188 operations, he noted, adding that the last of which was carried out in the south of the country, leading to the arrest of 4 individuals and seizing 15,000 Ak47 bullets.

Since the arrival of the Trump administration, Washington has been taking a harsh approach towards Iran in its foreign policy. The US notably withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal on 8 May 2018 and imposed hefty sanctions against Tehran's oil, banking and shipping sectors in November of the same year.
The head of Iran's Intelligence Ministry's Mahmoud Alavi announced on Friday that his ministry has managed to deal a heavy blow to the CIA's spy network, operating both within Iran and the region, Mehr News Agency reported. He reportedly said that dozens of spies, working in the state's sensitive sectors, have been arrested as a result of the ministry's work.
"In a complicated process against the US Central Intelligence Agency, 290 spies from its espionage network in different countries, including Iran were identified", he said.

US Officially Designates Iran's Revolutionary Guards as Terrorist Group
Alavi further noted that a similar measure had been taken regarding Britain's MI6, promising to release more details about operations against both foreign intelligence agencies later. He also said that the info about the spy networks will be forwarded to friendly states interested in it.
Neither Washington nor London have commented on the report yet. The news comes amid ongoing tensions between the US and Tehran that have recently led to Washington designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation and Tehran adding the US Central Command (CENTCOM) to a list of terrorist entities in a reciprocal move.
Relations between the US and Iran have spiralled downward since US President Donald Trump took office. Trump withdrew the US from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the Iran nuclear deal, an international accord that lifted sanctions from the Islamic Republic in exchange for limiting its nuclear programme and allowing international inspections at nuclear sites.

Later in November 2018, Washington imposed harsh sanctions on Iran's oil, banking and shipping industries, trying to cut its oil exports. The US moves have been criticised by Tehran and other signatories to the nuclear deal. Iran has vowed to continue shipping oil disregarding the sanctions and threatening to block the Strait of Hormuz, the only maritime exit from the Persian Gulf, in case its exports are endangered.

Iran's Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi has claimed on Friday that his officers have identified tens of U.S. spies outside Iran.
Speaking before the Friday prayers in Tehran on April 19, Alavi said his ministry has identified "290 CIA spies" in various countries, Iranian official news agency IRNA quoted him as saying.
Alavi said: "CIA spies were identified and arrested and the agency's communications with its informers have been disrupted," but did not say how, where and when.
Nevertheless, he claimed that the United States has set up a "defeat committee" following the development.
The Iranian Intelligence Minister added that the ministry has changed his defensive approach to an "offensive and aggressive" one and has given hard blows to foreign intelligence services, without naming any particular country.
The statement by Iran's Intelligence Minister came one day after CIA director Gina Haspel said the agency has boosted its focus on Russia and Iran.
