SINGAPORE - Struggling consumer electronics retailer TT International said late on Thursday (Sept 28) it received notice that receivers have been appointed over its 51 per cent-owned subsidiary, Big Box Pte Ltd (BBPL), which owns and operates the same-name eight-storey warehouse retail mall in Jurong East.

The company, which is being restructured under a scheme of arrangement, said the warehouse retail scheme business undertaking and operations carried out at Big Box presently continue unaffected.
 
The moral of the lesson is, if you have any boxes, keep them at hime...

There are just too many malls in Jurong East. Hard for Big Box to survive when they are offering almost the same value proposition as JEM , IMM , Westgate and JCube. Not until HSR is up and running, it will continue to bleed red ink.
 
Land is scarce is sg thus space is premium even for area like Jurong. So this time of business model hard to be successful here.
And they can't make it as massive and comprehensive as those overseas. So end up with a half fuck setup.
 
My sense is that it has to do with culture and the size of the country. Singaporeans can drive anywhere within an hr and they also like to touch and feel with the whole family in tow. Then there is the habit of asking 100 questions and asking discounts and free gifts.

Yaohan pioneered the concept in Singapore and it still works today. Everything on display, competitive pricing, wide range.

Big Box should go into something different from the rest of the malls in JE. They should try the IKEA concept of DIY - BIG BOX style.

Why I say this is because of the tremendous opportunity that is presented by the white sites around the HSR region. In the next one to three years , the government is going to release large tracts of land around the Lakeside precinct for residential, commercial or mixed development. People will buy property. This means that they will buy furniture and interior decor. What Big Box is lacking is a theme that appeals to modern homes that cater to variety , creativity and innovation.
DIY is the way to go for futuristic homes. Simple, functional, creative, neat , organized and modern.

Big Box is in real trouble because it offers nothing novel!
 
Agree on DIY, they have the space and there is no appetite for this.

For the past 15 years, TT International's management has been messing up the company. They are more interested in getting into Top Volume list on SGX than cleaning their house.
