S'poreans who do not own cars may not be able to rely on buses which run on gasoline soon.
Some buses are currently running on electric. With more and more to come.

More Electric Buses to be Deployed from End-2026

News Releases 15 Dec 2025 electric buses

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded six contracts for 660 new electric buses, comprising 360 single-deck and 300 double-deck buses. The awarded tenderers are ST Engineering Mobility Services (partnered with CRRC), BYD, Yutong and Cycle & Carriage Automotive (partnered with Zhongtong Bus). Details of the contracts are as follows:

a) 100 electric single-deck buses and 150 electric double-deck buses to ST Engineering Mobility Services Pte. Ltd. for a contract sum of about S$35.7 million and S$79.0 million respectively;

b) 160 electric single-deck buses and 50 electric double-deck buses to BYD (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. for a contract sum of about S$71.3 million and S$34.5 million respectively;

c) 100 electric double-deck buses to Cycle & Carriage Automotive Pte. Ltd. for a contract sum of about S$57.8 million; and

d) 100 electric single-deck buses to Yutong International Trade Pte. Ltd. – Yutong Bus Co., Ltd Consortium for a contract sum of about S$43.9 million.

2 This marks LTA’s first large-scale purchase of electric double-deck buses. From end-2026, the new electric buses will be progressively deployed for passenger service to replace diesel buses that are reaching the end of their statutory lifespan. LTA had also called for a tender in November 2025 to install electric-vehicle charging systems in Mandai Bus Depot, as well as the future Kallang, Beauty World, and Tampines North Integrated Transport Hubs to support the electrification of our public bus fleet.

Features in New Electric Buses

3 The new electric buses will have the following features and safety systems:

i. Improved battery technology and capacity that will give new electric buses longer operating ranges, to enable more flexible and efficient operations;

ii. Passenger information display system providing real-time audio and visual updates to assist commuters with navigation throughout their journey;

iii. Safety systems to assist bus captains, such as onboard CCTV surveillance, collision warning and surround view functions, a driver anti-fatigue monitoring system, and a camera mirror system. New colour electronic display systems will be installed at the rear of each bus to give surrounding road users clear visual signals of the bus captain’s intentions, including turning, stopping, and moving off. These features were recommended by the Bus Safety Tripartite Taskforce.

4 The new electric double-deck buses will have three doors and two staircases. This will enable commuters on the upper deck to disembark via the rear staircase to make boarding and alighting smoother and quicker.

Tender Evaluation Process

5 Tender submissions were evaluated based on a two-envelope process that considered both quality and price. The price envelopes were only opened after the quality evaluation was completed. This approach ensures that LTA awards contracts to tenderers with high-quality and value-for-money proposals. For electric bus tenders, criteria such as the tenderer’s experience, track record, technical specifications of the proposed bus and compliance with local regulations, were factored into the quality evaluation. The total life cycle cost was also considered. The contracts also included an option to procure up to 50 more electric buses if needed.

6 LTA is committed to having a 100% cleaner energy bus fleet by 2040. By 2030, electric buses are expected to make up half of our public bus fleet. More tenders for electric buses will be called in the coming years.
