SINGAPORE - Football fans looking for a new venue hosting World Cup parties during the tournament in South Africa from June 11 to July 11, can have their kick on board the cruise liner Leisure World.
Singapore's most famous football fan, Walter Koh, told MediaCorp during an exclusive tour of the ship on Friday that he will be organising these parties during the tournament and will be charging each fan only $12 nett per night.
The price includes transfers to and from the ship anchored about 15km east of Singapore, free flow of Corona beer during the matches and all the food they can eat. Other beers and drinks are priced at only $2.
Live screenings will start from June 11's first two matches between the host country and Mexico at 10pm (Singapore time).
For fans who want to get back in time for work, the first ferry out of Leisure World will arrive at the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal at 8am the next morning. The trip lasts an hour each way, via Batam.
The package beats the clamp down on commercial public screenings of World Cup matches here after a report last month revealed that Singapore-based firm Wharf House had secured exclusive rights to such events.
But the ban won't affect Leisure World as it is anchored in international waters and receives "live" television feeds for the World Cup from Malaysia's pay-TV operator Astro via ESPNStar.
"I found out two months ago that Leisure World was going to screen the matches," said Koh, who made a name for himself organising trips across the Causeway for fans during the Malaysia Cup heyday from the mid-1970s onwards.
"I wanted to relive some of the fun we had during the Malaysia Cup days as well as give the new generation of football fans a chance to enjoy themselves."
The 78-year-old insists his latest project was not triggered by the ban on commercial screenings.
Collin Ng, manager of the vessel's operators New Century Tours, said they are now toying with the idea of extending it to key English Premiership matches when the new season starts in August.
Leisure World was launched in 1993 to conduct cruises in international waters and has a casino, restaurant, lounge and a deck bar.
Purchasing manager George Koshy is already planning to make at least 10 separate trips to the ship for key matches.
"For something like the World Cup, you want to watch games with friends, and drinks all night can really burn a hole in the pocket," said the 44-year-old.
"This is really a steal."
