Supercars, antiques, art and jewellery seized from Tunisia's ex-president could raise up to 10m euro for the country's government.
Supercars, antiques, art, jewellery and ornaments are among the items that are set to go under the hammer to raise cash for the government.
It is hoped the sale could raise up to 10m euro (£8.2m).
Thousands of luxury items seized from Tunisia's ousted ex-president Zine al Abidine Ben Ali have been put up for auction.
Ben Ali fled into exile in 2011 as the Arab Spring began
Government minister Tarek Dhyab said: "This is only 20 to 30% of (Ben Ali's) possessions. I say poor Tunisia, it was controlled by a gang leader - not someone fit to lead a country."
Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali cut the ribbon on Saturday to open the viewing of the collection at the Cleopatra Hotel in Gammarth.
Government ministers and ambassadors were the first to inspect the various lots. Members of the public will get the chance to view the items today.
Items of ornamental silverware are among the items up for sale
Auction organiser Afaf Dous said: "We have received many inquiries, even from outside Tunisia, even before the opening, asking about it and hotels have already been reserved by the visitors."
All of the money raised by the auction will be added to the government budget.
Ben Ali fled into exile in Saudi Arabia when protests swept Tunisia in early 2011, as the Arab Spring uprising gained momentum.
The Tunisian economy faces a number of challenges following the overthrow.
The economy shrank 2.2% last year, and unemployment stands at around 17%.
Have you ever wondered what LKY and LHL have in their possessions? Maybe one day Singaoreans may have the chance to auction their prized possessions too.
