White House budget director Russell Vought on Tuesday evening directed federal agencies to begin implementing their shutdown plans after Senate Democrats blocked a Republican plan to keep the government open beyond midnight.

The leaders of executive branch departments and agencies “should now execute their plans for an orderly shutdown,” Vought wrote in a memo, formally initiating the first closure of the federal government since President Donald Trump’s first term.

A government shutdown could force as many as 750,000 federal employees off the job each day, at a cost of roughly $400 million in lost compensation, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said in a new report.

The projections, sent to lawmakers on Tuesday, highlight the sweeping consequences of a lapse in federal funding that could begin as soon as midnight, when current appropriations are set to expire. While legislation passed in 2019 guarantees back pay for federal employees once a shutdown ends, the CBO warned that a prolonged delay in paychecks could ripple through households and local economies, cutting consumer spending and disrupting services across the country.

  • The government will shut down at midnight unless lawmakers reach a deal beforehand.

Government headed to a shutdown after last-ditch vote fails in Senate

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democrats have voted down a Republican bill to keep funding the government, putting it on a near certain path to a shutdown after midnight Wednesday for the first time in nearly seven years.

The Senate rejected the legislation as Democrats are making good on their threat to close the government if President Donald Trump and Republicans won’t accede to their health care demands. The 55-45 vote on a bill to extend federal funding for seven weeks fell short of the 60 needed to end a filibuster and pass the legislation.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Republicans are trying to “bully” Democrats by refusing to negotiate on an extension of expanded Affordable Care Act tax credits that expire at the end of the year.

“We hope they sit down with us and talk,” Schumer said after the vote. “Otherwise, it’s the Republicans will be driving us straight towards a shutdown tonight at midnight. The American people will blame them for bringing the federal government to a halt.”

Oh please. Beekok can print USD without paying back. Give good welfare to the people.

Pap only care about trying to scam more and more money from its own people. Then the people are naive enough to vote them in again and again .

Great question — it is confusing because “government shutdown” sounds like the whole country closes down, but it doesn’t. Let me break it down in clear steps:
1. Why does a U.S. government shutdown happen?
  • The U.S. government runs on a budget (money approved by Congress each year).
  • If Congress (House + Senate) and the President cannot agree on the budget (or at least a short-term funding bill called a continuing resolution) before the deadline, then the government legally has no money to operate many of its services.
  • When that happens, certain parts of the federal government are forced to “shut down”.

2. What actually shuts down?

  • Non-essential services pause:

National parks and museums may close.
Many federal workers (e.g., clerks, analysts, scientists) are put on unpaid leave (“furloughed”).
  • Essential services continue:

Military, police, air traffic control, border security, emergency medical care, etc.
    • Social Security, Medicare, and food stamps still operate, though with possible delays.
  • Basically: services critical to safety and security keep running; others freeze until funding returns.

3. Who gets affected?

  • Federal employees: Hundreds of thousands don’t get paid on time (though historically Congress repays them after shutdowns).
  • Citizens:

Can’t access closed national parks, passport services, or federal loan offices.
    • Delays in processing things like tax refunds, permits, or research grants.
  • Economy: Shutdowns cost billions because government spending freezes, businesses tied to federal contracts lose money, and consumer confidence drops.

4. Why can’t they just agree?

It’s mostly political fights:
  • One party (or faction inside a party) refuses to pass the budget unless certain demands are met — e.g., cuts to spending, limits on social programs, or changes in policy (like immigration or healthcare).
  • The other side refuses, leading to a deadlock.
  • Shutdowns happen when political brinkmanship outweighs compromise.

5. How does it end?

  • Congress eventually passes a budget deal (or at least a short-term resolution).
  • The President signs it.
  • The government reopens and furloughed employees return to work.
✅ Think of it this way:
A shutdown is like a landlord and tenant fighting over rent. The tenant (government) can’t pay until they agree on terms, so the lights go off in parts of the building. Essential things (like fire alarms and security guards) stay on, but other things (like the gym, pool, or cleaning service) stop until the rent is settled.
