Singaporeans are exercising more, eating better and undergoing regular health screening but more can still be done to promote a healthy lifestyle, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

"Singapore has been promoting healthy lifestyles for 20 years. We have made progress - more people are exercising, fewer are smoking and Singaporeans are generally more aware of the need to stay fit and healthy," said PM Lee at the launch of this year's National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign on Saturday.

Obesity rates however, have been going up as well, he noted, especially with more fast foods restaurants here and sedentary occupations, which was why Singapore must never let its guard down against smoking, especially among our young.

"Hence, we must redouble our efforts and see what more we can do to regulate advertising and promote healthy food choices," he said. "At the same time, each person has to take responsibility for his own health. We must each watch our weight, eat healthily and exercise regularly, and avoid smoking."

This is very true. If you know smoking is bad and you continue to smoke, you are digging your own early grave. If you know drinking is bad and you continue to drink, again you are digging your own early grave. If you are obese, you have to make effort to reduce your weight and to reduce the complications that will follow.

Ultimately, it boils down to oneself taking responsibility for his own health.

What about sudden death ? What about cancer? What about those genetically determined and pre-programmed diseases? It's important we have some savings in whatever form for our future healthcare expenditure because healthcare cost will escalate ....

So take care of your own body right now!

Maybe most of the smokers whose smoke you are smelling are from PRCs, ah nehs, pinoys and third-world country new citizens, etc.

A few well-choosen supplements taken daily could certainly help improve the health and quality of life.

I recommend daily doses of Vitamin D (prevents cancer), Tumeric (prevents diabetes) and CoEnzyme Q10* (prevents heart attacks).

* Ubiquinol form of CoQ10 is superior but a lot more expensive compared to Ubiquinone form. If the bottle doesn't state which form of CoQ10, it's probably the cheaper Ubiquinone form.

A healthy lifestyle includes avoiding indiscriminate zapping people. Anger, frustration and hatred are toxins to the body. Many believe they can cause cancer !!!

sgp hawker fares kills many sinkies by giving them high blood pressures, diabetes and conoray heart dieseases.

If you know the govt is screwing your ass , and sinkie keep on allowing that. how can it be healthy?

healthcare cost gonna go up ... ciggie cost gonna go up ... :(

expect everything to go up once healthcare cost goes up...somebody has to pay for all the rises....everything up up up....

cleaners pay goes up. hawkers pay more monthly maineteance fees....food sure to go up. if not , the standard will drop. less ingredients and less stock. food standard drops.....if food hygiene drops, more people will get laosia....go to see doctor, medical fees up....in the end, pay more and more!!!

so try to eat more at home lah....eat healthily and maybe be a vegetarian because meat is going to be more expensive ...and more toxic.

It is a matter of WHEN only. Not only the govt benefits when cigs cost more. Contraband sellers too.

this will encourage more people to go into the lucrative smuggling trade.... a really vicious cycle. how to solve? ban smoking???

Very true, especially at bus stops. When they first banned smoking at bus stops, it was wonderful smoke free air while waiting at bus stops. Nowadays they like to site one or two bins at two ends of the stop or at least one in the middle (behind the stop). Some ciggy addicts will purposely stand next to the bins and smoke away and their smoke will drift towards waiting passengers at the bus stop.

Where are all the NEA officers enforcing the law, or they just choose not to do anything now that there are more smokers in Singapore from the flood of FTs admitted? Or are the enforcers themselves FTs and therefore ignore the issue?:(

Even increase the prices, majority smokers still smoke ! It just cannot deter much effect
