Barefoot man eats durian inside Choa Chu Kang library, 'does not care' when confronted by security

A man was caught eating durian in Choa Chu Kang Public Library at Lot One shopping mall on May 13.
Stomper Jian Wei watched as the man sat barefooted on a chair in the library to eat durian at 8.20pm.

"The smell was very strong, and some people walked away. No one confronted him," he recalled.

"When the librarian came to advise him to leave, he did not listen and continued to eat his durian.
"When the security arrived, he had already finished the whole box. He did not resist but also acted like he did not care. He left after a minute."

A video taken by the Stomper shows the man being confronted by a security officer.

"The security told him to leave the premises, as he is not allowed to eat durian inside the mall," said Jian Wei.

Following a Stomp query, a spokesperson from the National Library Board (NLB) said it is aware of the incident.

The spokesperson added: "Our staff had approached the patron to remind him to adhere to the library's code of conduct, which clearly states that eating is not allowed in the library.

"NLB seeks our patrons' cooperation in ensuring that the libraries, as shared spaces, remain a conducive space for all to enjoy by following good library etiquette.

We also encourage patrons who spot such behaviour to approach any of our staff for assistance."

I was at the Jurong East Library several years ago, and saw a young mother reading a book while seated on a sofa, and holding her baby daughter who was fast asleep. A librarian who lacked common sense, told the mom that sleeping is not permitted in the library, and advised her to wake her baby up, or both of them had to leave. Why does NLB hire such brain dead robots?

Ask her to go to nearby Mayfair. Someone there can provide a temporary place for the puny fart to nap.

Allowing sleeping could lead to the library being used by retirees or the homeless in SG as a place to rest for extended periods, and not be there to read. This can strain resources and limit access for those who intend to use the library as intended. However, this was a case of a young mother who was there to read while seated on the sofa cradling a sleeping baby. The librarian probably left her brains at home when she reported for work.

I remember an incident more than 10 years ago at my previous company when a female executive was reprimanded for shopping during office hours, after she returned from lunch with a new handbag. However, she pointed out that it is common practice for her co-workers to return from lunch with tea, coffee and snacks which constitute purchases made during their lunch breaks as well.

Actually the smell of durian is nice.
If he doesn't disturb people and threw all the rubbish later what for kachow him.

Must have been the very nice new National library’s logo and branding that enticed him to enjoy his durian in the new environment

Sometimes you wonder if these overpaid security guards will risk their lives and limbs with siao langs or just boh chep and just get sacked.

The homeless and retirees are citizens of Sinkieland. Anyway with the massive crowds, our libraries become Times or MPH bookstores where people browse for free. And why would you want a book that is dated? E.g. The Lonely Planet guides - dunno why stock them when got travel sites, forums, Google Map reviews, TripAdvisor and YouTubers to give latest info in graphic and video glory.

Even the security guards and F&B staff have stopped asking this member of Raffles Town Club to stop putting his feet up at the lounge. He wouldn't listen because he is wealthy and thinks he owns the club.
