FA awaits Merseyside derby report

The Football Association will await the referee's report before deciding whether to take action over the missile-throwing that took place in the Merseyside derby.

A coin appeared to be tossed at Liverpool's Luis Suarez and more than one bottle was launched at team-mate Craig Bellamy while the strikers attempted to take second-half corner kicks during Saturday's fiery Barclays Premier League clash at Goodison Park.

Everton lost the game 2-0 after midfielder Jack Rodwell was controversially sent off in the first half by referee Martin Atkinson.

The FA are likely to receive Atkinson's report on Monday.

Allardyce: Tevez can rejoin us

Sam Allardyce watched his West Ham side salvage a point from a 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace - and then left the door wide open for Carlos Tevez to rejoin the club.

Argentinian striker Tevez has been suspended by Manchester City and told he will never play for them again after his apparent refusal to go on as a substitute at Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

West Ham's initial enquiry about a loan deal for the player who saved them from relegation in 2007 was given short shrift this week.

But Allardyce has insisted he would love to sign Tevez and claimed his alleged disruptive influence holds no fears.

"If he would like to join us and the chairman would like to pay for him then yes, why wouldn't you want a top-class player like that?" said the Hammers boss.

"I've worked with some world-class players in my time, they win you games when you least expect it.

"With a goal record like his why wouldn't you want him?

"I've had worse than him. I've had some bad ones in my time. Just keep playing him, that's the answer."

Ancelotti eyes BPL return

Former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti believes there could soon be a vacancy at Arsenal as he plots his return to the Barclays Premier League.

With Gunners boss Arsene Wenger under pressure following a poor start to the season, the 52-year-old Italian admits he would be keen on the job although he would also consider applying at Tottenham or Liverpool too.

"I have a strong will to remain in England," Ancelotti told Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

"For a coach, this is the ideal country.

"But I would only consider top clubs, including Tottenham and Liverpool.

"It's evident that Wenger's bench is wobbling and that in several months' time, an English coach will be appointed to replace (England manager Fabio) Capello in the national team, which will free up a place in a club."

Capello is under contract with England until the Euro 2012 tournament and the Football Association have said they will only consider an English replacement.

Returning to guide a Premier League club would grant Ancelotti the opportunity once again to go head to head with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson - for whom he has great respect.

"As time goes on, the more I fall in love with Ferguson," Ancelotti said. "As a coach, he is unusual.

"It's not as if he guides the training sessions because he delegates a lot and has an excellent staff.

"But he understands football like few do.

"With him, all the players improve.

"He has no fear of introducing youngsters.

"United play a European style of football, a modern style.

"But above all, Ferguson is a great person and he is humble."

Ancelotti has been out of a job since being dismissed by Chelsea in May after two seasons at the helm.

He was linked this summer with a move to Roma but he is happy to play the waiting game.

"I am in no hurry, I promise," he said. "The fact that I'm not coaching does not cause me anguish.

"In fact, I am enjoying life."

Rooney's dad denies betting scam

Wayne Rooney's father "vigorously" denied allegations of being involved in a football betting scam and was "co-operating fully" with the police investigation, his solicitor said.

Wayne Rooney Snr, 48, was bailed pending further inquiries on Thursday night after being held earlier on Thursday when police swooped at his home in West Derby, Liverpool.

Eight other people, including the Manchester United star's uncle, Richie, 54, and Liverpool-born Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings, 26, were also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud. Merseyside Police said all have been bailed until January next year.

Merseyside Police said the arrests were the culmination of a joint operation with the Gambling Commission into "suspicious betting activity".

Anthony Barnfather, partner at Pannone solicitors who are representing Mr Rooney Snr, said in a statement: "Mr Rooney vigorously denies all of these allegations. We are co-operating fully with the investigation. No further comment will be made at this time."

The investigation relates to a match between Motherwell and Hearts on December 14 last year, the police said.

During the game Jennings was shown a red card in the 83rd minute of his side's 2-1 defeat.

The midfielder had been booked earlier in the match for fouling Kevin Kyle as Hearts launched a dangerous break.

The Gambling Commission, an independent body which was formed under the 2005 Gambling Act, began the probe shortly afterwards when some members of the Association of British Bookmakers publicly raised concerns about betting patterns on the game.

Jennings, originally from Kirkby, near Liverpool, has been a key player for Motherwell since joining from Tranmere in the summer of 2009 and signed his third one-year contract at Fir Park in July.

The club are currently second in the Scottish Premier League.

In a statement, Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan said the arrests follow "extensive inquiries" into alleged betting irregularities at the match.

Regan said: "It is important to stress that the evidence gathered throughout this thorough period of investigation has involved only one Scottish match."

He added: "The Scottish FA will make no further comment at this stage."

Motherwell said in a statement: "Motherwell Football Club can today confirm that the Scottish Football Association made the club aware that one of our players was taken to a Merseyside Police Station early on Thursday morning in connection with an ongoing investigation.

"We have no further comment to make at this time. Any further statement would be wholly inappropriate and the club can and will only do so when properly appraised of the next steps in the process by the relevant authorities."

Richie Rooney was detained at his home in Norris Green, Liverpool, before being bailed.

Jennings was arrested at his Glasgow home and brought to a Merseyside police station for questioning and then bailed.

A 22-year-old from Kirkdale, a 26-year-old from Croxteth, a 29-year-old from Bootle, a 31-year-old from Litherland, a 68-year-old from Fazakerley, and a 36-year-old from Kirkby were also detained and bailed pending further inquiries.

Ruiz struggling to keep up

8 October 2011

12427268020.jpg

Fulham's Costa Rican striker Bryan Ruiz has admitted he is struggling to adapt to the Premier League following his big-money move from Twente.

Ruiz was a deadline-day capture from the Dutch club for 10.6 million pounds, and was seen as a real coup for Fulham after attracting a lot of interest from the Cottagers' Premier League rivals.

He has started just one game so far for Fulham and appeared three times off the bench, and is still looking for his first goal for the club.

"I've not had a comfortable time so far,” Ruiz admitted in an article in The Sun. "When I played in Holland I used to have an extra second to think."

"That makes a big difference. Here I am placed under greater pressure and get less time to act on the pitch."

"You also get more one-on-one situations in Dutch football. Here you get two players breathing down your neck straight away."

Ruiz will be in the mix for another start when Fulham travel to Stoke in their next Premier League fixture on October 15.

Anzhi eye more big-name moves

11 October 2011

12427269040.jpg

Anzhi Makhachkala are interested in signing Arsenal striker Robin van Persie and Chelsea's Nicolas Anelka according to coach Roberto Carlos.

The Russian club, backed by billionaire owner Suleyman Kerimov, signed striker Samuel Eto'o from Inter in August and have also purchased former Chelsea wing-back Yuri Zhirkov and Hungarian winger Balazs Dzsudzak in recent times.

Carlos, 38, was the club's first big-name arrival in February, and has taken on the role as co-caretaker manager along with Andrei Gordeyev after Gadzhi Gadzhiyev was sacked last month.

And the former Brazilian international has revealed his side are set to continue their heavy spending and are also monitoring the situation of Santos starlet Neymar.

Speaking to French TV show Canal Football Club, Carlos said: "We want to make a club the calibre of Real Madrid or Barcelona."

"Anelka is not the only player. Nene from PSG and Van Persie from Arsenal are players we are following. And Neymar? I talked to him."

"If Real, Barca or Manchester United cannot pay the transfer fee, we will pay it. Suleyman Kerimov can offer what he wants."
