A Dhaka court today (10 July) sent a man to jail in a case filed over hurting religious sentiments by setting fire to three volumes of 'Tafhimul Quran' at Dhaka University.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir passed the order and asked the investigation officer to submit the probe report by 17 August, said DMP Prosecution Division Sub-Inspector Md Shah Alam.
No lawyer appeared on behalf of the accused, Mehedi Hasan, 31, during the hearing, SI Alam said.
Shahbagh Police Station Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Nazmul Hasan produced Mehedi before the court and sought an order to keep him in jail until the investigation was completed, the SI added.
According to the case statement, the incident took place around 1am near the west side of Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University, where three volumes of Tafhimul Quran, written by Jamaat founder Syed Abul Ala Maududi, were set on fire.
People who gathered at the scene detained Mehedi. Nilkhet Police Outpost SI Kamal Uddin Mia took him into custody after arriving at the scene.
Police said Mehedi suffered minor injuries after being beaten by the crowd and was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for primary treatment.
Later, SI Kamal Uddin Mia filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station under Section 295A of the Penal Code over allegations of hurting religious sentiments.
