BANGKOK (AFP) - Nearly 15,000 police and soldiers will be deployed in the Thai capital next week for the planned "shutdown" of Bangkok by demonstrators trying to overthrow the government, officials said on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has called February elections following weeks of opposition street protests. But the demonstrators have vowed to block the vote, which they fear will only prolong the political dominance of her billionaire family.

The protesters say they will occupy the capital from Jan 13 until they win their battle to topple the government.

They plan to set up stages around the city, preventing officials from going to work and cutting off power and water to state buildings.

Best time to go is now. Super cheap, and as they are desperate for tourists, they will treat you like a VIP.

Time for Crown Prince Vaginalongkorn to step up and deal with the situation.

Going to Bkk is fine. Most places are ok. But that chump Suthep wants to shutdown the whole Bkk on 11 Jan 14. So the situation id fluid.

My only concern is airport shut down if I go there next week.

Take a budget flight and land at Don Mueang airport. From there you can take bus, taxi or walk.

Protesters kept harassing only Suvarnabhumi airport.

Just felt sorry for the ordinary Thai guy .... the whole situation is being used to safeguard the interest of a few. The majority of Thai people wants peace, development and prosperity for their families and nation.

Look at countries like Iraq, Syria, Egypt..... in the name of democracy and for the removal of dictators, hundreds of thousands were killed and their nations set back by decades. Situations that were far worst than the days when the so called dictators ruled. In the middle east, it was the Americans that stirred the shit (for the benefit of the jews), thereafter left the mess and misery for the locals to endure into the future. What fools.

Same fools are now in Bangkok, where a minority is running and messing up everything for the majority. Twits.

I think the king is behind the opposition and so is the army. Once Thaksin mobilize supporters from the north there will be a coup. If the Red supporters are not mobilized, then other "legal" means will be used to ban Thaksin's clan from politics.

The people in bkk I spoke to don't like Thaksin and also reluctant to discuss. One taxi driver told me it can be dangerous to say bad things about him. They do not seems to fervently support the protest but at the same time do not object to the removal of the pm. That is the impression I get.
