This Aljunied Town Council worker was seen harassing an elderly woman who was collecting empty cardboard boxes.

STOMPer winniepoo who witnessed this incident says:

"On 10th April 2010 at around 4 pm, I saw an elderly lady collecting an empty cardboard box placed next to a dust-bin in front of the Cheers store at Blk 810, Hougang Central.

"Suddenly a foreign worker in uniform, bearing the Aljunied Town Council logo on the back of his shirt, came to take it away from her together with the other boxes which the elderly lady had retrieved elsewhere.

"I was appalled by such an act and intervened when an argument started between the lady and him.

"But the worker claimed that those boxes belonged to him.

"I saw him coming out holding a Singapore Pools chit apparently after buying a bet.

"I hope the authorities involved can take action as I assume this is a case of harassment of senior citizens.

"Also, is he allowed to take time off to place bets when on duty and is he allowed to collect boxes during his working hours?"

Aljunied Town Council has taken action against a worker who harassed an elderly woman and stopped her from collecting empty cardboard boxes.

This was in response to STOMPer winniepoo's complaint against the foreign worker, who was apparently arguing with the woman over the boxes that she had collected.

In an email sent to STOMP(23 April), a spokesperson from Aljunied Town Council said:

"The Aljunied Town Council would like to thank the STOMPer for the feedback on 19 April 2010 which highlighted the inappropriate behaviour of a conservancy worker towards an elderly woman who was picking up cardboard boxes.

"Action has been taken against the worker who is from our conservancy contractor.

"Following this incident, the contractor has reminded all the workers to uphold good conduct and to be polite in their dealings with the public.

"The contractor will also apologise to the elderly woman who was harassed by his worker.

"The Town Council has impressed upon all its contractors that we will not tolerate any inappropriate behaviour by their workers when they are dealing with the public.

"Residents who have other feedback may also contact us at Tel: 6744-1033 at any time during normal office hours."
