Since it is the Olympics and due to the number of posts, this might be topical.

Western Sports Model:

Various sports are governed by their respective sports bodies generally made up of ex-sports persons, coaches etc. The State does not get involved. The State offers grants for elite programmes but the bulk of the expenses come from the parents. The individuals pay for accommodation, air travel, uniforms and food, except when it comes to flagship events when the Parent sporting body pays from grants from the state.

Selection:
Each sporting body will compete with one another to pick their crop of budding talent by visiting school and testing kids for physical and mental attributes. Totally voluntary. They obvious cannot cover all schools. Many kids join junior sports clubs. The state again does not get involved. Just because you are MP, you don't get a special pass.

Funding:
Various sports bodies vie with each other to grab a share of the funding pie from sponsors, foundations and the State. Their past performance is the main factor. Nearly all of them including coaches fund themselves and for all their effort onlt get state recognition such as OBE, CBE , knighthood etc at the end of their sporting life.

This does not mean that everything is fair and sweet in the west. Parents are the worst - cheating, sleeping with coaches, bribing coaches, funding the sports bodies with anonymous grants etc. the whole thing is rife with corruption, favouritism etc . So it all depends on the individual and the talent that they posses to rise to the top. Along the way, the streets are strewn with broken bodies, broken egos and broken dreams. So the really good are treated and respected all over the world.

Journalists who have the inner lane write cryptically and that is where you get your answers. Why do they heap praises on some and are very cautious about others. Lance Armstrong is a classic case. Nearly all articles have an interesting slant from the very start of his career. The same with Flo Jo and Marion Jones. Carl Lewis despite his phenomenol accomplishments never had this slant or uncertainty about him. Michael Jackson is revered and respected the world over. Not a hint of suspicion all these decades.

One of the worst offending western nation when it comes to doping are the Australians. Its why the Chinese love to send their charges there for specialised training. Micheal Klim's coach years later had his safe stolen from his house. The Police recoved the safe subsequently and found vials of steroids. He obviously wasn't injecting himself. Their cyclists high performance training location is called a "shooting gallery" as they found numerous discarded syringes and needles but they could not convict anyone as they keep using high powered legal experts to get away.

Their doping came across the from the racing industry which was notorious for designer drugs meant to avoid detection by vets.

The world is such. So when those associated with sports expertise start making certain statements learn to put two and two together. Why did Marion Jones sponsorship start faltering despite her successful Sydney Olympics stint. Why is she a bankrupt now.

Look at Lance Armstrong, when he was charged recently he engaged a Washington lobby group and the ery next day a Senator spoke in support of him and asking that state funds to withdrawn from the testimg body.

Only the USA would try to destroy their own heros. It's this sort of attitude that is bringing the country to its knees.

When Spanish cyclists are caught doping, their own sports governing bodies will do their level best to exonerate them as was the case with Contador. Does anyone really believe that Indurain won 5 tours on steak, oats and plain water?

Continental Europe is in its present crisis because they were misleadimg the IMF and the world with frabricated economic data. The greeks were the worst. It was no suprise that both their start female and male athletes were chased down up and down the streets of athens by the doping Nazis a few days before their own Olympics. Medal stripped again.

The reason why Cycling is the world's most famous doping sporting activity is because it started and continues to be operated from continental Europe. The only other place that it can survive is eithe China or Australia. Its explains why cyclists typically do not regard the US as a location for premier events.

.

Which event did Michael Jackson do again? Breakdance? :)

The other 2 sporting events that come close are bodybuilding and weightlifting. Both our Singapore male and female star bodybuilders were banned fro doping. The weightlifting guys have been repeatedly warned and theathened with bans by IOC for the same reason. Not surpring that first to test positive in London was a weighlifter.

The steroids found in Gennadi Touretski's safe will not pass the anti-doping tests. Can you really conclude the links with Michael Klim or is there a big cover-up?

Eastern Europeans and Russians have a notoriously long history for using dope. The results of the primitive bad old days are seen today in the gender changes / hairy appearance of those sportswomen.

In future, we may see the after-effective of dope in 50yos out-running 20yos in the 100m sprint. :)

Also, you have to question the commonly used medicines or even food (eg China pork) now classified as dope.

Kiddy sports like ping pong and bedminton do not have incidents of drug use....Singapore boleh for choosing such sports!

On a separate note, how things like bowling and bodybuilding can be considered 'sports' is beyond me. One SEA games chaptek was also a sport.

People who think badminton is kiddy sports should try one hour of competitive badminton and see how kiddy it is. The experience can be humbling.

Ok maybe not badminton, but ping pong has no defence..when a fat old auntie can be in the world top 10.

Agree. Especially playing singles. Doubles still bearable.
Used to play twice weekly.

It appears that our SG model is about the state being involved and the "2nd and 3rd tier" politicians trying to get short term success for their "first tier" politician bosses, so that the latter will have something to be pleased about when meeting their counterparts from other countries.
There seems to be less focus on development of sport in SG, development of promising local young talent, building a sporting unifying spirit nationwide, trying to do things fiscally prudently and sensibly, forging a sense of bonding and common goal among the ordinary people.
Whatever happened to the excitement when Ang Peng Siong was once the fastest man over 50 m, a born and bred local girl with the surname Kim was the country's top ping pong player, a bunch of local football players were winning the malaysia cup over state teams, local boy Wong Shoon Keat was the country's best shuttler, etc etc. Maybe the silver spoon buddies can tell us what they think.
