I don' think Singaporeans are daft or stupid. Old Man was certainly intelligent and very shrewd in the way he himself said that he knew the tipping point of Singaporeans and worked from there. He also knew that if they are owned homes albeit HDB, it means they are would not be in position to welcome uncertainty. We are one of the largest home owning countries ever.
It was case of tolerance and thus quid pro quo in the main. We accepted his detention of political rivals and the placing of very high insurmountable barriers to political participation by those genuine in the need to help Singapore. He also coopted anyone who was intelligent into the Civil Service and the PAP at an early age. Our Civil servants are the best paid.
And when we compare ourselves with any other 3rd world or even some of 1st World such as Portugal etc, we are streets ahead.
Singaporeans in a sense have been outmanoeuvred by a very smart and ruthless man. He made sure we had the best food money could buy, we can travel to any country for a holiday on any means of transport, we also can freely leave this country and by these measures, there was no need to fight the system. So instead of outright corruption in places like India, China, Malaysia etc, we have small group or minders and cronies to feed and captive press to keep quiet.
The smart ones who have the means will migrate and raise the kids in a much more fair and justice society.
With the son in place, the ball game has changed. The guy is not smart enough to control his wife and is not his father. He cut even convict his siblings. Things are falling apart as Chinua Achebe wrote in his book.
It is not fair to say that it is because Singaporeans are daft or stupid.
The PAP achieved the 70% popular vote largely through the FT policy. There are currently 500,000 to 800,000 new citizen voters in Singapore. This is a solid vote bank that the PAP can count on no matter what happens. Through the HDB integration program, the PAP controls which GRC these new citizen voters belong to.If there is a weakening of popular support, the PAP has the power to increase this vote bank as desired so as to shore up support and ensure victory.
As unhappy as many Singaporeans are, their voice at the ballot box has long been taken away. For the next 15 to 20 years, the PAP will continue to win handsome election victories even as the economy continues its steady decline.
This of course cannot last forever. Eventually, the economy will decline to such a state where it is no longer economically attractive for foreigners to migrate to Singapore. At the same time, there will be concurrent emigration out of Singapore. This will be led by parents, anxious for the future of their children. The collision of these two demographic forces will result in a Singapore which looks very much like Liverpool with its large number of abandoned old buildings.
