Dear friends from the press,
We are organising a petition drive against the impending SMRT fare hike next year and a limited boycott of its services in the month of December.
Protestors against the hike are encouraged to sign up a petition here.
We are also organising a limited boycott of SMRT in the month of December by asking people to carpool, cycle or walk to work in a show of peaceful defiance against the impending fare hike.
Carpoolers are encouraged to contact us so that we can group them up together during the month of December.
Singaporeans have faced up to all sorts of price increase recently and so far we could not do anything to reverse the trend.
Everything seems to have gone up except for our pay package and many people are struggling to live from hand to mouth.
The SMRT fare hike is proposed even when the transport giant reported that it has made $120 millions net profit last year which is ridiculous.
We also take issue with the fact that SMRT train rides have been less than desirable and that overcrowding is still a problem here. It will be a mockery to increase fares when productivity is still not there.
We hope that Singaporeans will step up actively to campaign against such unreasonable fare hike in future as a matured civil society.
The month-long campaign will be peaceful and non-violent in nature and we ask as many Singaporeans as possible to join us in saying “NO” to a transport fare hike next year.
Thanks & Warmest Regards,

Gilbert Goh

Editor’s note: This email has been forwarded to Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew.

LEEgime has committed to spending more than S$1 billion over the next 5 years on improving transport facilities.

It has to recoup its investments.

No use one lah. What petition? That $120m profit was up till Apr 2013. They'll tell you that for this current fiscal year (up till Apr 2014), they are anticipating a loss.

How else to pay dividends to the SMRT shareholders? ;)

Who are the majority shareholders in these 'privatized' companies e.g. SMRT, Sembcorp, Singtel, Comfort Delgro, Capitaland etc?

then wait until april 2014 then talk lor

then wat happenned to the 120m profit? go to where?

SMRT shareholder want dividen 5% +/-1% yearly.
So die die must hit the range. So does the taxi company.
Why SMRT/SBS never have monthly pass eg $100/month unlimited travel on SMRT&SBS. Many city have monthly unlimuted pass.
In KL RM150/month unlimited ride on all publis transport bus/LRT/train.............

I thought that "see saw Cleopatra" claimed that the reason SMRT focus on retail business is to reduce fare hike?
SMRT has been getting quite a huge revenue from the retail business and yet they still keep increasing fare almost every year.

they pay themselves generously well and ignore the plight of the bus drivers who went on strike previously. simply buay kan!

How else to pay the SMRT CEO's million dollar salary and his MINDEF coolies more money?

Only riots work in sinkapore.

I met a local Chinese boss in hardware business before every new year will set profit target for example set $3mil then at year end made $2.5mil will tell staff they lost $0.5mil so only 13th month bonus nothing more.

Gahment's win win situation... Want to travel "Free", wake up "Go to work early"... Increase productivity.

If boycott, the garmen will say ridership too low so need to import more FTrash. Sinkie worse off.
