PERTH, AUSTRALIA: Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said that Parliament is a place for serious discussion and not just criticism.

Mr Lee added that Parliament is not just a place to hold either the government or opposition to account.

Instead both sides should participate in solving problems together, or Singapore would be worse off for it.

He was speaking to the Singapore media at the end of the three-day Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth on Sunday.

Earlier this month, Singapore's Parliament sat for the first time since the May General Election, and members shared their thoughts on the measures needed for the country to prosper.

Mr Lee said that while the opposition had put a lot of effort into their parliamentary speeches, it remains to be seen if they will participate in helping to solve problems.

"This is not just a show, it's not just theatre. This (Parliament) is a place where we are discussing very serious business and where we have to make very difficult choices for Singaporeans on behalf of our voters," he said.

"And I think as government, it's our responsibility to speak the truth to Singaporeans and I think it's the opposition's responsibility also to acknowledge the truth and to speak it, whether or not it's politically advantageous to them," added Mr Lee.

does PM Lee mean that the WP MPs had not been telling the truths in parliament? Sue them lah! don't sue ah? so they must be telling the truths lah!

The truth is that the bilingual policy is absolute disaster dissolving unity as a nation. Mr. Lee should face up to it.

Yes, bilingual policy is a disaster. so are the following policies disasters:

1. Stop at Two
2. casino
3. Influx of cheap foreigners
4. Expensive public housing
5. Ignoring the plights of the poor, sick, needy and aged.

The above policies will haunt singapore and singaporeans in the future

agree with your observation...if AssLoong is serious abt working together with Opposition MPs and Singaporeans to better Singapore, he must treat all singaporeans better and respect all

How about that? Singapore as usual is the only Westminster style 1st world parliament whose incumbent govt wants the Opposition parties to help them solve its problems while at the same time denying them rights and access to institutions like the PA, and engaging in partisan politics using HDB, Electoral Dept.

C'mon, take us seriously and we'll play along. But dont take us for a ride!

If PAP and WP were to switch places, will PAP help WP solve problems? Did PAP help David Marshall or Lim Yew Hock solve problems?

Well, it is strange indeed. If opposition MPs are there to help the ruling party to solve problems, why are the ministers take all the credits by having the highest pay in the world?

But it seems that WP MP CSM is ready to help PAP to solve problems and he is begging PAP to listen to him and WP MPs....

The PAP has kept Opp politics out of parliament since 1963 when the Barisan Sosialis walked out and took the struggle to the streets. Since then it has enjoyed nearly 50 years of peace and tranquility and pushed many unpopular Bills without any dissent like a juggernaut thru Parliament. Finally, much against its will, the electorate returned 6 full Opp MPs into parliament, and in its first sitting, everyone of these MPs gave a sterling performance in their maiden speeches. The quality of their speeches made the PAP MPs pale in comparison, and they tried in vain to redeem themselves with rather lame statements.

So now the govt wants to 'fix' the Opp by challenging them to cooperate and discuss serious issues, and not criticise. This is another attemot to silence them because the PAP knows that since they are not in power, the Opp MPs can hardly get any policies implemented. And by making them 'solve' problems which the PAP has caused, it aims to tie them down and keep them busy with sums and riddles instead of harassing them like bees in a bonnet.

that's where pritam singh's freedom of information comes in. wp wants to get data to counter government's version of why policy is this, what the plan is that. once wp gets hold of data, they can challenge pap's policies convincingly. pap know. and they scared.

The PAP as usual wants WP to agree with the way it is solving problems. But I am sure CSM or LTK or WP will not fall for the trick but instead ensure that the PAP will kowtow to WP's way of solving problems.

The PAP shld realise that if they listen to WP's criticisms instead of living in denial, then problems will be solved the right way. After all, the people did not elect WP MPs into parliament to act as more PAP clones! They want a difference in solutions, not the same medicine dosed out by PAP!

Unfortunately, you failed where WP has succeeded, and the grapes do indeed taste a little sour to you.

I know teachers are intelligent and honest dedicated people, and I risk insulting and antagonising them by comparing PAP govt to a teacher in class management. What PAP govt has done is what a teacher would have done to someone who is disruptive, noisy or just wouldn't shut up: when he couldnt send him out, he gives him some work to do to keep him busy, and his nose to his wheel. So transparent a trick even my 3 yo grandson could tell me that.
