In his New Year’s message to Singaporeans, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong acknowledged the challenge of ‘managing’ the inflow of foreigners and to keep HDB flats affordable, but re-affirmed his committment to his ultra-liberal and pro-foreigner policies by emphasizing the ‘need’ to keep Singapore open.
“We have the means to tackle these problems, and make things better. But in doing so we must remember to keep Singapore open and welcoming to talent, preserve the value of the flats of 800,000 HDB homeowners, and strengthen the spirit of self-reliance among Singa­poreans,” he was quoted as saying in Channel News Asia.
When Lee became Singapore’s third Prime Minister in 2003, he unveiled his ambitious plan to increase Singapore’s population to 6.5 million people and all of sudden, the flood-gates are flung open and Singapore was swarmed by foreigners from all over the world especially from China and India.
Despite rising public discontent and unhappiness at the relentless influx of immigrants, PM Lee continued to insist that Singapore needs foreigners to keep the economy competitive.
It is not known what PM Lee means exactly by ‘talent’. Perhaps he is referring to the ‘harder-driving’ mainland Chinese like Li Hongyan, the drowned PRC prostitute who came to work in Singapore as a ‘catering supervisor’, but also moonlighted as a karaoke hostess and freelance prostitute at the same time.
