Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has called on all Singaporeans to defend the environment - as they would defend the country.
He was speaking at the Launch of Clean and Green Singapore (CGS) 2011. PM Lee said Singaporeans should see it as part of Total Defence, and that each citizen has a part to play in keeping the environment clean and green.

To recognise the efforts of those who have come forward to contribute to environmental sustainability, PM Lee presented a total of 17 awards this year to individuals as well as public and private partners. The theme for this year's CGS: "promoting environmental sustainability".
One award receipient was 51-year-old Anjalai Ammal, a senior Horticulturist with the Tampines Town Council. Her love for gardens and nature inspired her to create 36 gardens within the last 7 years in the Tampines area. Today, she was presented the Community In Bloom Ambassador Award 2010 for her contributions.
"Gardening has built up my self-confidence," she said, adding that gardening is a fun activity for the whole family and not just for senior citizens only.
At the event, PM Lee also launched the Clean and Green Singapore Carnival 2011, a two-day carnival showing Singaporeans simple ways to take care of the environment. A highlight of the carnival was the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint Exhibition which comprises of 4 segments - live, commute, play and community. These segments contain various initiatives that showcase how Singaporeans can live an environmentally sustainable lifestyle.
Think being environmentally friendly is too much of an effort? Two environmentalists tell us how easy and rewarding it really is. » Watch the video.
