Speaking to tourism industry leaders on Friday evening at the Tourism50gala dinner, PM Lee Hsien Loong said that Singapore needs to continue spending money on upgrading attractions in order to grow the tourism industry over the next 50 years.

He said that Singapore was facing increased competition from other tourism destinations and would also be facing labour shortages so we would need to find new ways to attract visitors.

The gala dinner was organised by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) to celebrate 50 years of tourism.

PM Lee highlighted that Singapore now has many world-class attractions and is much nicer than in 1964 for visitors.

"To keep Singapore special and to keep the tourists coming, we must grow the tourism industry by raising the quality of the experience and the value of every tourist, rather than solely by increasing the visitor numbers," he said.

He mentioned that Singapore will continue to spend money on bringing big ticket events to Singapore such as the recent WTA Finals and the yearly F1 races.

He also explained how the government has plans to redevelop existing tourist attractions such as the redevelopment of Mandai to move the bird park from Jurong and more developments are going to be made on Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay.
When the Gardens by the Bay was first built, many Singaporeans were angry about it because of the huge price tag that it carried, at taxpayers’ expense.

In total, Gardens by the Bay cost $1.1 billion to build and it continues to cost $53 million a year to maintain. (See: $53 MILLION TO MAINTAIN GARDENS BY THE BAY EVERY YEAR?)

There was never any public consultation on the decision to spend so much taxpayer money and it seems that the government is happy to continue making plans and spending large amounts of taxpayer money to make Singapore look good on the outside for tourists.
Meanwhile, the government continues to spend very little on helping local Singaporeans.

Please stop destroying Singapore. You already have done enough damage for the last 10 years.

I know you want to grab the land in Jurong to build more flats and condos. Jurong Bird Park is iconic.

That's the problem with having a group of people in power for too long, they do whatever they please with reckless abandon and with zero accountability. The euphemism for this is 'political stability'.

Don't be surprised it's just an excuse to build more casinos.

If there is labour shortage, why bother getting more tourists to come? This means getting more ft's.it does not add value to existing citizens.

I have not been to Sentosa for years. Last week drop kids at rws for company d&d. Jammed from basement car park to vivo city. It was crazy, total time about 45 mins just to get out of the island. Noted all Malaysian tour buses and many Malaysian reg cars. While inside the basement car park, the atmosphere was like in genting. The dim lighting, half pass 6 decor, disorderly traffic and most importantly the tour bus but minus the cool air. That is the kind of tourist attraction we are capable of developing and destroying and converting original heritage places into tourists traps that sell craps e.g. Chinatown. Stpb is sure doing a great job.

You should have parked at Seah Im hawker centre carpark and then take the monorail train from Vivocity. Or if you're feeling adventurous, climb up the Marang Trail path and ride the cable car from the top of Mount Faber.

I like to compare Malacca City with Singapore because both have the heritage of Straits colonialism. Here, Malacca have done it right: there are many touristy spots, but only selected places (e.g. revolving tower ride, Baba Nyonya museum, river cruise) require you to pay money. Most other places are free for visitors. Everything feels authentic and there are no scammy tourist traps e.g. ah beng shops at Sim Lim Square.

For Singapore... go to Chinatown's Food Street, walk through it and have a look for yourself. You be the judge and draw your own conclusions.

this prime minister doesnt get it,it is authentic culture and native lifestyle and heritage and architecture and music and arts that draws other people to another country, not over commercialized shopping malls and billion dollar white elephants designed by presidential scholars with no clue what they are doing and head stuck up the ass.......which is why everybody wants to go to australia.
