I understand the Malaysia version of 152 defines Malays as people who embrace Islam as their religion, adopt the Malay culture, and speaks the Malay language. This is regardless they are Chinese, India or European. As long as they satisfy the 3 conditions stated earlier, they qualify for Malays' special rights in Malaysia.

Is this the same in Singapore? How does Singapore define "Malay"?

as long as the race in your NRIC indidcated that you are malay you are entitled to thge special rights given to malays

according to singapore constitution article 152:

Minorities and special position of Malays
152. —(1) It shall be the responsibility of the Government constantly to care for the interests of the racial and religious minorities in Singapore.

(2) The Government shall exercise its functions in such manner as to recognise the special position of the Malays, who are the indigenous people of Singapore, and accordingly it shall be the responsibility of the Government to protect, safeguard, support, foster and promote their political, educational, religious, economic, social and cultural interests and the Malay language.

it only mention the special position of malays not muslims nor it did state that islam to be singapore's national religion unlike in malaysia so even if you are chinese or indian muslims i don't think you can get any special rights.

but anyway malay special rights in singapore only includes free education up to secondary school, their language being the national language, the coat of arms written in malay (majulah singapura). it does not include things like quota in local tertiary institutions or a compulsory deputy prime minister position for malays (although i have heard from elsewhere suggesting that one of the 2 DPM position should be given to malays)

article 152 based on article 153 of malaysian constitution if i'm not wrong. and must be seen in the context of 1957 - convenient race-religion-occupation typologies as a result of british divide and rule policy. back to the future, in singapore, one is a malay when one's dad is a malay, and once malay, it means islam. i'm not familiar with laws here on renouncing islam as a religion and any apostasy laws here unlike up north.

As least for the criteria of Malay minority certificate, all Malays must be practising Malay customs, Muslim religion and speak Bahasa Melayu as mother tongue. Not all Muslims are Malays but all considered Malays must be Muslims. Malay customs incorporates strong bondage to intermarriage and adoption. People born of other races can be integrated into and be considered Malays too as long as all the above criteria are satisfied. For example, Zainul Abidin who was actually Indian if going by paternal lineage (the losing Malay MP of Aljunied). However, not all Indian Muslims are considered Malays. All, not any, of the criteria must be satisfied.

This set of criteria wasn't really invented by PAP when GRC system was implemented. It was invented by UMNO in Malaysia. The Indian-Malay more famous far and wide than Zainul Abidin is Mahathir Mohammed.

Under the Malaysian Constitution, anyone who is a Muslim, speaks Malay habitually and practice Malay custom is considered a Malay. Yes, many early UNMO leaders are not pure Malays. Other than Dr Mahathir, other notable names are Syed Jaafar Albar (Lion of UMNO), Gaffar Baba and Onn Jaafar, founder of UMNO.

Sultan also stay in HDB not palace. What Malay right?
