Foreigners may practise Singapore commercial law
FOREIGN lawyers will be allowed to practise Singapore commercial law here if they pass a new exam.
The move is laid out in a Bill tabled in Parliament on Monday by Law Minister K. Shanmugam.
It will add to the supply of lawyers and could allow firms here to do more corporate work across the region, say industry players.
There are currently 966 foreign lawyers registered with the Attorney-General's Chambers to practise foreign law here.
Many of them work for Qualifying Foreign Law Practices (QFLPs) and Joint Law Ventures - foreign law firms allowed to work in Singapore.
Both types of firms are allowed to practise Singapore law only in permitted areas and using Singapore lawyers.
