The article below was drafted in reaction to this report on ChannelNewsAsia: "Flexibility, being your own boss, decent income: Why younger people are working as private hire drivers."

There are some people who are against the trade of private hire for this reason: they think it kills an individual’s employability and retirement adequacy.

Devadas Krishnadas posted the following on his LinkedIn page: “These jobs (referring to gigs such as private hire driving) have no professional value. Even plying the roads consumes vast amounts of energy… yet these drivers refer to themselves as their own bosses.”

“In truth, the real beneficiaries are the ride hailing companies all gunning for blockbuster IPO listings. Drivers constitute a free labour force for which they have no responsibility or liability.”

“While a number of drivers drive on a short term basis, for an increasing number it is becoming a long term proposition. As time passes and they continue driving their employability get eroded.”

Devadas thinks that drivers are being made used of. That long-term exposure to gigs, such as private hire driving, would reduce their employability and eventually see them completely being wiped out when technologies such as driverless cars replace them.

The concept of Grab drivers being their own bosses is ridiculous!

Lol...not only are u not your own boss, you have multiple bosses throughout the day! In the morning, u may face an asshole OL who scolds u for taking a longer route to Raffles Place. In afternoon, some asshole book you, but suddenly cancel. In the evening, you get stuck in traffic, but u are screwed by the fixed fare.

No MC, annual leave, no annual incremental, no bonus, no job progression, income is highly irregular.

The earlier Grab drivers are usually PMETs and civil servants who pick up their rides on their way to work or when they are going back home. It's a great sideline. I have friends who do that and they are not going to quit their regular jobs.

They are training to be great taxi drivers. What's wrong.

Like Travis bickle here?

Add food delivery to the list
But many mats dun seem to mind coz they making more that their previous mundane jobs

Many good jobs in the market for sinkees such as Grab drivers, security guards, cleaners, dishwashers and junk collectors.
Another pride of PAP !

When I was younger, I used to think like Devadas Krishnadas.

As I grew older, and saw how structural unemployment resolve itself into the gig economy, my motto in life became "The most important and basic task in life is to do whatever it takes to place food on the table for yourself and your loved ones".

If one cannot even place food on the table, no need to discuss anything else. Period.

Young people or otherwise, if you still cannot place food on table after you knew deep inside you that you've tried your fucking best at job interviews or shooting startups, then is alright to become a PH driver. What? Erosion of employability and retirement adequacy? Fuck all that. Those lofty ideals are created for purpose of economic debate, and do absolutely nothing to empower anyone to place food on the table.

Let me ask you, what shame are we talking about when we can come home with our heads high, and with packets of food in our hands, and see the happiness on our family faces? What shame?

When others snatch away your rice bowl, you either snatch it back, or you snatch it from another person. That's how any economy in any era works. Man will never change. Adam Smith, every man for himself.

I suggest everyone go India for a degree instead since it's much preferred over local degrees if anyone is looking to upgrade themselves.

Their future was killed, so they become PHD.. nothing shameful, in life, not everything goes according to plan... might come 2nd wind later in life. Better than doing nothing and wallow in self-pity.
