Are netizens all 'NATO' online only ?
The Straits Times has taken a dig at netizens for “NATO” (No action, talk only) in a commentary published yesterday titled “Activism or lip service on social networks?” in which its Assistant Editor Serene Goh opined that online ‘activism’ displayed by netizens is unlikely to be translated into political activism in real life.
Quoting the recent Survey on Political Traits and Media Use by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) which found that more than 70 per cent of Singaporeans aged 21 and above agreed or strongly agreed with the statement ‘It is more important to have good economic growth than freedom of speech’, Ms Goh expressed doubts that Singaporeans will go far for the freedoms they want.
Downplaying the impact of social media and online activism, Ms Goh added that the outward display of ‘activism’ online by netizens is not a sign of real conviction:
“Perhaps the views published on social media are no better than furry footwear or messy hairdos; an outward display of the attitude du jour, not a sign of real conviction. Perhaps online engagement indicates the need to connect and keep up with the Net set, not activism.”
She also insinuated that the number of ‘likes’ on a Facebook page does not necessarily reflect the genuine sentiments on the ground:
“Many postings were ‘Facebook likes’, or comments of the ranting nature. But such posts died off as quickly as they sprung up after the GE…..Many who say ‘yes’ to attending ‘events’ on Facebook do not show up. Not all who ‘like’ a cause will donate to it. And there is no predicting how a Facebook ‘fan’ of a party or candidate will vote.”
Ms Goh may be right after all: The ‘Petition to remove Tin Pei Ling as a MP’ garnered more than 63,000 ‘likes’ initially in less than one week, but none of its members dare to step forward to host a petition drive in real life. As a result, its members are abandoning the page in drives.
On the other hand, ‘Mandy Mary’, the netizen who started the ‘Black Sunday Movement’ walked her talk by stepping into real life to organize the event and she now has a committee to further her cause.
Unless netizens walk the talk by participating in offline activism, they will always be dismissed as mere daft ‘noises’ by their PAP ‘masters’ who will continue to oppress them like serfs without any rights.
