A shop assistant, who offered to service an iPhone 4 for $30, refused to return it unless he was paid seven times that.

Lee Tiow Chin, 46, was fined $3,000 on Thursday. He pleaded guilty to committing criminal breach of trust of the phone worth $888.

A district court heard that Mr Huang Bin, 21, visited the Vigo Communication shop in People's Park Complex in October 2011 for jailbreaking service.

This would allow him to download applications onto his iPhone 4 that are unavailable through the official Apple App store.

Lee, who was working there, said he could do it for $30. Some 20 minutes later, the student called the police after he was told to pay $210 or he would not get his phone back.
