I remembered Mr. Francis math teacher and handsome Indian man used to use the 12" wooden ruler and wack our knuckles on the table with the edge of the ruler. Everyone lan lan keep quiet kenna wack because we made mistakes. Most students turned out to be good in maths all the way to secondary school. Seen his photo in the ST obituary one day more than 5 years ago I think. He is a very good teacher.

Don't think this is possible in today's education environment. Kid's parents most likely call police or call MOE.

Have to admit, reasonable corporal punishment in education is not a bad thing after all. The parents today really spoil the kids.

Oh dear good old schooldays. I was once sentenced to caning on assembly stage by the principal for truancy. I quietly sneaked out of school after recess for some private ECA. Unfortunately, the SA spotted me leaving school and reported to the principal the next morning. The SA was kind too. He said he'd have to do his duty to report but leniency has a limit. Had he stopped me red legged at the gate, I could face a sack.

My form teacher who was a nice fair pretty Malay lady. The modern type, not the halal type. The model type, not the obese type. She lived in my neighborhood too and sometimes we went home together. She vouched for me and bailed me out of the caning.

Used to remember in the 80s during my Primary school days, where teachers ruled the class with an iron fist.. There was this form teacher of mine an old spinster by the name Miss Yeo who would cane and not hesistate to give a few slaps across the face of us students.. I too kena few slaps from her for failing to do my homeworks on time.. Our parents knew of all these happenings inside the classroom and never once did our parents enter the principal's office to lodge a complaint against her.. Today's students are pampered lot.. One shout from the teacher to the student and the parents would march into the Principal's office the next very morning..

These days, a teacher cannot beat a pupil. If a beating is warranted, it has to be approved and executed by the discipline master. No educator - to the Hells with all these CCB fancy terms - is allowed to use words like "stupid" or "retarded" on a pupil. Apparently some high-up in MOE believed that children might be traumatized by the use of such adjectives. Bloody rubbish.
