SINGAPORE — Out of mischief and boredom, he fired a shot from his air gun from his window at a stranger walking past, hitting her just above her chest.
The price for his actions: Seven weeks’ jail and a S$12,000 fine.
The court heard today (Aug 12) that Ernest Sim, a 26-year-old personal banker, bought an air pistol and an air gun along Patong Beach in Phuket, Thailand sometime in December 2013. To smuggle them in, he dismantled them into parts.
On Jan 26, at around 7.30pm, Sim spotted a “suitable victim” walking towards his block of flats in Clementi Street 14.
Feeling mischievous and bored, he took aim and fired at Ms Bian Xin, 29. He then turned off the lights in his flat immediately in a bid to escape detection.
Later that night, Ms Bian’s friend reported the matter to the police who raided Sim’s flat.
The court also heard that Sim also hurt another victim using his air gun on two other occasions the same month. The district judge took these offences into consideration in sentencing Sim.
Voluntarily causing hurt using an air gun is punishable with up to seven years’ jail, a fine and caning. The illegal import of arms carries jail of up to three years and a S$10,000 fine, while unauthorised possession of such weapons can be punished with a maximum of three years’ imprisonment and a S$5,000 fine.
