[TD="class: msgtxt"][h=2]Monday, February 13, 2012[/h][h=3] Singapore spends more on defense per capita than any country except Israel: analysts [/h]

A viation Week, 12 Feb 2012
Airbus Military could be one of the main beneficiaries of the Singapore air force’s next round of procurements. Singapore has at the top of its procurement list aerial refueling tankers, strategic airlifters and anti-submarine warfare fixed-wing aircraft, purchases that will see that the island continues to be, for the next few years at least, the biggest spender on new defense equipment in Southeast Asia.
The 2011 defense budget was SG$12.1 billion ($9.6 billion), accounting for 26% of the government budget and about 5% of gross domestic product (GDP). Some analysts estimate that Singapore, with a population of about five million, spends more on defense per capita than any country but Israel. Full story

A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

They keep telling you that we are Asia's Israel.....

The Israel of SEA, surrounded by hostile Muslim neighbors which will do you in anytime.
Now be a good, obedient citizen, serve your NS and pay your taxes (for the military-industrial complex).

Also, when the SAF goes for

1) Support missions in occupied Iraq

2) Peacekeeping mission in Timor Leste

3) Rebuilding mission in Aceh, Indonesia after a tsunami/earthquake

Guess what is paying for these elaborate photo op sessions?

That's right, the 26% of the government budget and about 5% of gross domestic product (GDP)

Nobody said national defense is unimportant. But when you indulge in military spending that is way out of proportion to what the country realistically needs, and then you say you don't have enough money for welfare and a social safety net, I call BULLSHIT.

It's easy to buy weapons, but the hardest thing about military is to maintain them. A small miserable component can easily cost a bomb. This is also the best way to siphon money out of the coffer without much transparency.

In Taiwan, such thing could be seen even if it meant to murder a fellow high ranking officer just to keep the corruption going. It's a big biz.

Thai Royal Navy couldn't even afford a tour in the sea without scrambling any helicopters on its deck because it could bankrupt the coffer.

Big boys toys for our Paper Generals, Rear Admirals and Air Force Chiefs... Another shopping goodies bought for them by their PAP Masters.. When War comes to Sinkapore, we'll shall see how long this tiny snort island can last..

Wasting money again on more expensive but useless weapons. Even North Korea and Iran have come to their senses. Get some nukes!

If Martin Luther King Jr had his way, he'd prefer that all the money spent defending a country be given as a handout to those fat, ugly, useless, good for nothing blacks that infest the ghettos of most US cities.

Give me a stealth bomber anytime.
