TOKYO -- For the first time ever, a shinkansen bullet train has developed a structural anomaly recognized by the Japan Transport Safety Board as a grave incident posing the risk of a serious accident.

The defect appeared Monday on the No. 34 Nozomi train during its run from the southern city of Hakata to Tokyo on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen line. The train is owned by West Japan Railway.

The bullet train ran for around three and a half hours, producing an unusual smell and later an unusual noise, before it was finally decided to halt operations at Nagoya Station and transfer the 1,000 or so passengers to other trains. Upon inspection, a crack was discovered on one car.

The Safety Board has dispatched a three-person team to investigate and ascertain the cause. In labeling this a serious incident, the board used a designation that has never been applied since the formation of its predecessor, the Aircraft and Railway Accidents Investigation Commission, in 2001.

JR West presented this timeline for the incident: The Nozomi 34, with 16 cars, set off from Hakata Station at 1:33 p.m. Crew members first noticed a burning smell when the train departed Kokura Station around 1:50. Train maintenance staff boarded the train at Okayama Station, and although a growling noise was heard, the decision was made to proceed because the train seemed to be running fine. The conductor confirmed the strange odor as the train neared Kyoto Station around 4:20. Inspection of the undercarriage after 5. at Nagoya Station revealed leaking oil, and it was decided to suspend operation.

Monday night, a crack was discovered on the side of car 13's undercarriage. In addition, the coupling transferring torque from the motor to the wheels was found to be discolored.

Based on the report presented by JR West, the Safety Board determined that the damage to the car could have affected the safe operation of the train and designated this a grave incident. JR West plans to carry out detailed inspection to uncover the relationship between the crack and the smell and sound.

A Shinkansen journey from Fukuoka to Tokyo was suspended after a crack was found in the undercarriage, the first "serious incident" involving a bullet train, the Transport Safety Board said.

It said the fault could have triggered a major accident as the board mounted an investigation Dec. 12.

The train’s operator, West Japan Railway Co. (JR West), said the same day that the damage was discovered Dec. 11 after abnormal sounds and smells were detected coming from the train during the journey.

No cases involving Shinkansen have previously been recorded as serious incidents by the board since comparable data became available in October 2001.

The N700-series Nozomi No. 34 departed from Hakata Station in Fukuoka at 1:33 p.m. on Dec. 11, according to JR West. When it left the next station, Kokura, a member of staff noticed a charred-type smell.

Maintenance workers brought in at Okayama Station to investigate heard abnormal sounds like a motor groaning in the third and fourth cars from the front of the 16-car train, but concluded they were not symptomatic of a deeper problem that would hinder running of the train.

Next, a conductor noticed unusual smells in the train soon after it had departed Kyoto Station. Workers checked underfloor sections at the next stop, Nagoya Station, and found a problem in the undercarriage of the fourth car from the front. Oil was leaking around a "tsugite" joint that conveys the rotations of a motor to the wheels.

JR West then decided to suspend operation of the train. About 1,000 passengers transferred to other trains to travel on to Tokyo.

Further checks found that the tsugite had become discolored as if it was charred, and the crack was found in the framework of the undercarriage.

No abnormalities had been found during the train’s safety check conducted on Dec. 10.

JR West carried out an emergency inspection of 129 undercarriages that had been manufactured by the same company in 2007, when the Nozomi No. 34's undercarriage was made, and found no abnormalities.

The railway operator has not disclosed the name of the manufacturer.

JR West said the cause of the problem that afflicted the Nozomi No. 34 remains unclear and is continuing its investigations.

Shinkansen back in service between Kyoto and Hakata after power outage

OSAKA – Shinkansen services resumed normal operations Thursday morning following wide disruptions due to a Wednesday power outage that affected at least 50,000 passengers, including 1,500 people who stayed in train cars overnight.

According to JR Tokai and JR West, the outage, which began at around 7:55 p.m., forced the cancellation of 29 trains and caused delays for 144 trains between Kyoto and Hakata stations.

JR Tokai said it found and fixed a severed overhead power line in Takatsuki, Osaka Prefecture at around 1 a.m. Thursday. The company said it was looking into why the line, which has a diameter of 1.5 cm, was cut. JR Tokai periodically checks and replaces the lines as they wear out from contact with the pantographs of high-speed trains.

Damage to overhead power lines caused outages between Shinagawa and Odawara stations on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line in 2010 and near Koriyama Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line in 2015. Both cases led to major disruptions.

JR Tokai allowed 1,500 passengers who had no way to get home or reach their destinations to stay overnight in shinkansen trains at Tokyo, Nagoya and Shin-Osaka stations.

At Shin-Osaka Station after 1 a.m. Thursday, a passenger complained to a JR agent about the disruption, which forced him to miss his last local train home.

Another passenger, a 46-year-old woman from Osaka’s Izumiotsu, stayed overnight on a train at Shin-Osaka Station. “I was stuck on the train and couldn’t go home as I missed my last train (from Shin-Osaka),” the woman said.

Kiyoshi Morita, 54, was in a long line of people waiting for taxis at Kyoto Station in the early hours of Thursday.

“The sun might rise before I can get a taxi,” said Morita, who was trying to get home to the city of Joyo.

A 36-year-old passenger whose train stopped due to the outage said his train car went dark except for backup lights. He said an announcement was made asking people not to smoke because the ventilation system was offline.

He said other passengers seemed annoyed by the delay, letting out audible sighs.

“Everybody looked tired,” he said.

NAGOYA - The Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train line is set to mark its 50th anniversary in October, having carried more than 5.5 billion passengers since its 1964 debut.

"We would like to put special emphasis on this milestone year," declared Koei Tsuge before assuming the presidency of Central Japan Railway Co., operator of the line, in April.

The project to build the shinkansen line started in April 1959, amid Japan's postwar high-growth period, and was completed in just over five years. It went smoothly thanks to a "Dangan Ressha (bullet train)" project before the start of the Pacific War to connect Tokyo and Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, over a distance of 970 kilometers within nine hours.

Although the Dangan project was suspended during the war, land lots acquired for it and completed tunnels helped facilitate the shinkansen project.

The shinkansen began operating between Tokyo and Osaka on Oct. 1, 1964, nine days before the start of the Summer Olympic Games in the nation's capital. It drastically improved the transportation capacity of the Tokaido line, which was nearing its limit, and carried more than 100 million people within the first three years of service.

Prompting the movement of people, goods and capital, the shinkansen served as the locomotive of Japan's economic growth from the 1960s. When the World Exposition was held in Osaka in 1970, some 10 million of 60 million visitors reportedly used the shinkansen.

The shinkansen not only became the foundation of Japan's economic growth by linking Tokyo and Osaka but also gave hope to Japanese people as a symbol of the nation's postwar recovery from "burnt-out ruins," said professor Satoshi Fujii at Kyoto University's Department of Urban Development.

The shinkansen has live up to its "3S" slogan for speed, safety and stability created by the late Hideo Shima, chief engineer of the project. There have been no fatal accidents involving the bullet train network, while it is known for its extremely high punctuality, despite operating at speeds of up to 270 km per hour. In fiscal 2013, delays from scheduled arrivals averaged only about 50 seconds per train.

Hiroshi Suda, 83, who served as the first president of Central Japan Railway, better known as JR Tokai in Japanese, for eight years following its establishment through the 1987 breakup of the Japanese National Railways into several privatized companies, said, "Safety is the absolute requirement, unsurpassed by anything else, and will remain so forever."

The shinkansen network now extends from Aomori in the north to Kagoshima in the south. The Hokuriku Shinkansen Line, which currently runs between Tokyo and Nagano, is due to be extended to Kanazawa by the end of fiscal 2014, while construction is under way to build the Hokkaido Shinkansen and connect Fukuoka and Nagasaki for the Kyushu Shinkansen.

JR Tokai is expected to start construction this fall of a magnetically levitated train line to connect Tokyo and Nagoya in about 40 minutes, compared with the current 100 minutes or so by the conventional shinkansen.

JR Tokai hopes to export the maglev Chuo Shinkansen technology to the United States and other countries in the future.

The maglev technology will "bring revolutionary changes to the 21st century as did the Tokaido Shinkansen 50 years ago," said Yoshiyuki Kasai, honorary chairman of JR Tokai. "It will contribute to a new lifestyle in the world."

In China they just ignore cracks and strange noises.

They'll carry on running the trains to the point of failure and then send in an army of peasants to clean up the mess.

The next day it is business as usual till the next catastrophe.

Japanese and European trains are history already. The new rail road master is PRC and they are the BEST now. The can complete the most impossible projects like tracks on thousand miles of permafrost highland, deserts, impossible tunnels, river gouges, rapid water, hundreds of miles of coastal m&d land, they can build impossible bridges. Chinese trains are so efficient, economical, comfortable, quiet, frequently scheduled, easy to book ticket, pay cashless online, nice waiting concourse, good seats, wifi and 4G connected. Good food good drinks, nice girl watching. No horse run top of the world. I personally experienced and compared. Absolutely top.

Chinese trains uses technology from europe mostly under "transfer of technology". Trump has raised this issue as a hinderance to a more open market.

Today's Chinese development exceeded Europe & Japan & USA in many domains and areas, these G7 are unable to catch up nor match Chinese any more. In the stages before today, when Chinese escalated from lagging far behind G7 till today's level, they had imported technologies from others. Their changes took place too fast and time spent was so short.
