FT article on Shane Todd is "inaccurate" and "mischievous": Police

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/ft-article-on-shane-todd-is-inaccurate-a/671536.html

What justice?

Is it even not more mischievous that the Stinkapore Police in the report wrote of bolts in the bathroom walls that Shane used to hang himself when no bolts were found on even hole where bolts could have been were found.

Was not the Stinkapore Police report calculated to interfere with administration of justice in the first place?

WHAT THE FUCK ARE THEY TRYING TO HIDE?

it very hard to establish "Justice" in a place where $$$>Life, where truth are turn away by Lie.

The word "calculated to interfere with the administration of justice in Singapore" had already Labelled FT are "Interference the Singapore Law ?" Can That Be True?

Another "Conspiracy" against Singapore Gov.? Does that mean, Gov. have to sue Publisher again cos the Enforcer say so? Just Watch and See…

Am sorry for the Parent of Shane Tood, for searching the Truth.
If can even establish Shane Tood death was Murder, that would be already a Victory, as of the High Tech conspiracy part… it properly wouldn't stand.

SINGAPORE – Evidence presented Monday in a Singapore investigation revealed a U.S. software engineer was unhappy at work and had written suicide notes before he died last year in what his parents insist was a murder.

Software engineer Shane Truman Todd, 31, was found hanging from a black strap secured to a door and had no visible signs of injury on his body except redness on his forearms and legs, the state counsel's opening statement said. The strap was fashioned into a noose, and a white towel also was around his neck.

Police found no signs of forced entry into the apartment, but they did find links to suicide websites on his laptop and suicide letters written to Todd's family members and loved ones.

Parents Rick and Mary Todd, who attended the inquest, told The Associated Press in March they consider the evidence fake. They believe he may have been murdered over his research in the U.S. into material used to make heat-resistant semiconductors, a technology with both civilian and military applications.

Rick Todd said his son in early 2012 had expressed concerns to his parents that he was being asked to compromise U.S. security. But he said Shane Todd wasn't specific.

His parents traveled from their home in the U.S. state of Montana to Singapore days after his death last June and found his belongings packed as if he intended to leave for good and saw no signs of a hanging, such as marks on the door. Mary Todd also said the alleged suicide note was obviously fake because it thanked the Institute of Microelectronics, the former employer he had grown to hate, and had other false details.

Todd's parents had sought for the FBI to lead the investigation into the scientist's death, though the status of any assistance it has provided is classified.

The first witness at the coroner's inquest was Todd's girlfriend, a Filipino nurse working in Singapore who discovered his body. Shirly Sarmiento testified Shane had often confided in her about his suspected depression and that he had mounting unhappiness with the "dishonest environment" in his workplace. She also mentioned he feared "heavy hands coming after him."

Todd's parents were somber throughout the proceedings, occasionally getting up to speak with their lawyers.

At least 36 witnesses will be called to testify during the coroner's inquest, including personal friends, IME colleagues and forensic doctors.

The inquest is expected to last 12 days, and its conclusions cannot be appealed.

While his parents were in Singapore, they found a hard drive missed by investigators that contained thousands of documents Todd had backed up from his work computer. After having it analyzed by a computer forensics expert, they found a draft of a project outline between IME and the Chinese telecom giant Huawei on the development of an amplifier device that utilized gallium nitride.

The heat-resistant material has civilian uses in products like LED screens and cellphone towers and military applications in things like radar and satellite systems. Todd had been trained in the U.S. on proprietary equipment that produces the material but is restricted for export because of the potential military applications.

Huawei has said it had no cooperation with IME related to gallium nitride.

SINGAPORE — The girlfriend of a U.S. software engineer whose parents insist he was murdered in Singapore said at a coroner's inquest Monday that he had been unhappy at work and feared "heavy hands coming after him."

Police have said Shane Truman Todd killed himself. State counsel presented evidence of links to suicide websites on his laptop and suicide letters written to his family members and loved ones.

Parents Rick and Mary Todd, who attended the inquest, told The Associated Press in March they consider the evidence fake. They believe he may have been murdered over his research in the U.S. into material used to make heat-resistant semiconductors, a technology with both civilian and military applications. The Todds have received assistance in the case from U.S. senators and the FBI.

Todd's girlfriend, Shirley Sarmiento, found his body in his apartment June 24. The 31-year-old was hanging from a black strap that was fashioned into a noose and secured to a door, the state counsel's opening statement said. The statement said Todd had no visible signs of injury on his body except redness on his forearms and legs. Police found no signs of forced entry into the apartment.

Sarmiento, a Filipino nurse working in Singapore, was the first of at least 36 witnesses who will be called to testify during the inquest, including personal friends, IME colleagues and forensic doctors. The inquest is expected to last 12 days, and its conclusions cannot be appealed.

She testified that Shane had often confided in her about his suspected depression and that he had mounting unhappiness with the "dishonest environment" in his workplace. She also mentioned he feared "heavy hands coming after him."

Mary Todd also said a suicide note that police showed her and her husband was obviously fake because it thanked the Institute of Microelectronics, a former employer he had grown to hate, and had other false details.

Huawei has said it had no cooperation with the Institute of Microelectronics related to gallium nitride. IME has said neither Todd nor the company was involved in any classified research.

Todd's parents had sought for the FBI to lead the investigation into the scientist's death, though the status of any assistance it has provided is classified.

Singapore begins inquiry into Shane Todd death

Shane Todd's parents say "everything points towards murder"

Singapore has opened a coroner's inquiry into the death of a US engineer whose parents believe he was killed over a China-linked project related to sensitive technology.

Shane Todd's death, in June 2012, was registered as a suicide by hanging.

But his family allege foul play was involved, pointing to work they say was linked to China's Huawei Technologies.

Both Huawei and Mr Todd's employer, a Singapore government institute, reject the claims.

Authorities in Singapore have been working with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation on the case after US officials called for Mr Todd's parents' concerns to be investigated.

The inquiry - which will focus on determining the cause of death - is expected to last until the end of May, after which a verdict will be issued.

Mr Todd's parents, Rick and Mary, are in Singapore and will be testifying.
'Never materialised'

Courtroom 15 at Singapore's Subordinate Courts was tightly packed as local and international media crowded in to hear details of a case which has sparked intense public interest.

In an opening statement, the senior state counsel acknowledged that scrutiny, and said the probe would present evidence so a "proper determination" could be made into the cause of Shane Todd's death.

The engineer's parents, Rick and Mary, were present - they are expected to testify in coming days. The Montana couple were accompanied by US embassy officials.

First to take the stand was Mr Todd's girlfriend, Filipino nurse Shirley Sarmiento, who discovered his body in his apartment. She is among more than 60 witnesses expected to be called.

Lawyers representing the Todd family, as well as the company he worked for, will be allowed to examine the witnesses.

The outcome of the inquiry into how Shane Todd died will be final, and under Singapore law there will be no opportunity to lodge an appeal.

It was in a Financial Times report in February that Mr Todd's parents raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding his death.

They told the newspaper that what they found at their son's home did not match details in a police report related to his apparent suicide. They also said they did not believe he was the author of a suicide note shown to them by police.

Mr Todd had been employed at the Institute of Microelectronics (IME) in Singapore, a unit under the state-owned Agency for Science, Technology and Research.

He had feared a project he was working on harmed US national security, his parents told the FT.

They picked up an external hard drive at his home, which the FT said contained copies of their son's computer files from IME, including a planned project apparently involving Huawei - a Chinese telecommunications giant - and IME.

Huawei has been labelled a potential national security threat by a US Congressional committee over fears about its ties to China's government and military.

According to the FT, the files detail a project using gallium nitride (GaN), a semiconductor technology that has both commercial and potential military uses.

IME and Huawei said preliminary talks to collaborate on a project did not progress.
'Depressed'
Mary and Rick Todd, parents of Shane Todd Mary and Rick Todd told the FT that the scene at their son's apartment did not match police reports

K Shanmugam, Singapore's foreign minister, told Reuters news agency in March that Mr Todd had been " involved in a small project with Huawei that lasted nine months".

"IME discussed a project involving GaN with Huawei. This GaN project has been the subject of much, and sometimes breathless, media speculation," he said.

"The reality is IME and Huawei could not agree terms on the project and thus the project never materialised."

Colleagues of Mr Todd - who had a history of depression - described him as depressed in the months leading up to his death, Reuters reported.

In an opening statement the senior state counsel said that Mr Todd had consulted a psychiatrist in Singapore in March 2012 complaining about "struggles with stress, anxiety and depression due to work and life-related issues".

Mr Shane was at that time prescribed anti-depressant tablets, which were found in his apartment after his death.

Mr Todd's parents told the FT their son had described himself as "anxious" about work before he died, but that he had rejected a suggestion from his mother that he was depressed.

Singapore police present evidence of suicide in controversial death of American engineer

After officers revise their story, Shane Todd's death looks to be more tragedy than spy thriller

Investigators and friends testified today that Shane Todd, the American engineer who was found hanging in his bathroom in Singapore last year, was depressed and even visited suicide-related websites in the months before his death.

It was the first day of testimony in the highly sensitive 12-day coroner's inquest, which was commissioned after Todd's parents raised questions about their son's death. The Todds believe that Shane was murdered, possibly because he facilitated an illegal transfer of military-grade technology from the US to China through his work at the Singaporean research agency Institute of Microelectronics. There is evidence Shane was working on a radio frequency amplifier using gallium nitride, a cutting-edge technology potentially worth billions.

The case even attracted attention from the FBI, two senators, a congressman, and the secretary of state. If true, the Todds' accusation means that the friendly Asian trade ally is acting as a proxy for China, which could have significant implications for relations between the US and Singapore.

""The state is acutely aware of the strong public interest in this case.""

"The state is acutely aware of the strong public interest in this case," Singapore's counsel wrote in an opening statement. "We are committed to presenting all the relevant evidence to the Court, so that a proper determination can be made as to the cause of and circumstances surrounding Shane's death."

Singaporean officials and police had remained largely silent until now, letting the Todds set the narrative through a deluge of media interviews sparked by an in-depth investigation by the Financial Times. During that silent period, the state interviewed at least 57 witnesses, at least 36 of whom are expected to be called to the stand.

This morning's session was focused on Shane's character and his mood before his death. The afternoon session was focused on the first responders and the scene at his apartment when he was found. After today, many of the questions that raised suspicions now appear to have logical answers.

For example, the Todds discovered that sensitive files on their son's computer had been accessed after his death. The police now say it was one of their detectives who accessed the files. The Todds also found one medical expert who examined the autopsy report and concluded it was consistent with homicide. Today the state presented three experts who agreed with the official diagnosis of suicide, including the chief medical examiner for Maryland and the chief medical examiner for Jacksonville, Florida.

Initially, the police told the Todds that their son had drilled bolts into the marble walls of the bathroom and used those to hang himself. But when the Todds arrived on the scene, there were no holes in the wall. Today, all the first responders testified that the hanging mechanism was actually a simple strap with a plastic buckle that was slipped over the top of the door.

""I can't tell you enough how sorry I am.""

The suicide notes that were found on Shane's computer were also released in full, along with his last text messages to his girlfriend, in which he canceled plans. "I can't tell you enough how sorry I am," one excerpt reads. "I just can't explain fully what I am going through."

The girlfriend, Shirley Sarmiento, was the one who found Shane's body. She testified that Shane was depressed and withdrawn, and that he had told her he hated his job and felt there were "heavy hands coming after him." She thought that he was overanalyzing. Three of Shane's friends also testified that he was not doing well, but none expected suicide.

"He displayed no evidence at all that he would take his own life," said Michael William Goodwin, Shane's housemate. He testified that Shane was a perfectionist who hated his job, and that Shane had lost weight and hair in the last few months before his death. Shane was also upset about dropping a $10,000 piece of equipment, Goodwin testified.

The Todds' legal team did not press the issue of the discrepancy in the police's initial statement that Shane had drilled holes in the wall. On cross-examination, the Todds' lawyers instead focused on whether the police acted as if there was an assumption of suicide before there was proof and whether the scene was "materially altered." They also focused on whether Shane's feet were touching the ground when he was found.

"On cross-examination, the Todds' lawyers focused on whether the police assumed it was a suicide"

The inquest drew about 75 attendees, mostly international and local press. The Todds are expected to testify and bring most of their evidence in the second week of the inquiry. They believe Shane was murdered because he was working on a sensitive project with Huawei, the Chinese telecom giant, the substance of which may have constituted a breach of US law. The scope of the inquiry is limited to the facts surrounding Shane's cause of death, however.

Shane's parents seemed satisfied with the hearing, even though the evidence now points to suicide. "We like the judge, how he is proceeding. We like the whole process," Rick Todd said after the hearing. "It's very early in the case, we really don't have much to talk to you about. But we really appreciate all of you. We thank you for being here. And if it wasn't for the press we wouldn't be where we are."

The Singaporean state counsel said the case is proceeding ahead of schedule. The process will resume tomorrow at 9:30AM Singaporean time.
