Crowd gathers outside City Plaza & along overhead bridge every Sunday, businesses mixed about scene
Every Sunday, the overhead bridge connecting City Plaza and Kinex, as well as the areas nearby in Paya Lebar, become gathering spots for foreign workers on their day off.
They would hang out, dance to music and enjoy themselves on their day off.
While some nearby businesses see no wrong, others have decided it's better to close for the day, just to avoid the crowd.
Occupy walkway, grass patches
One member of the public took to Facebook on Nov 16 to lament the inconvenience caused by Sunday crowd, Shin Min Daily News reported.
Along with the post, the person uploaded photos of the Sunday scene, in which crowds of people could be seen occupying the walkway outside the mall.
While some sat, others were completely at ease and were seen sound asleep.
Some were also seen dancing and singing in front of a tripod-mounted phone.
In another photo, the overhead walkway was seen filled with rows of people.
They laid out mats and occupied almost half the walkway.
Similarly, some were seen sound asleep as they laid on their mats.
Inside the stairwell, there were signs that advised against waiting, sitting, or gathering in the vicinity.
Differing sentiments among tenants
Mall tenants differed on how they felt and viewed the Sunday situation.
While some found that there was no harm done, others spoke of how they were affected by the crowd.
"Although they stayed outside the mall most of the time, I don't quite take to the noisy scene. Plus, they aren't our customer base. So, I'd rather close on Sundays and get a good day's rest," a tenant on the second floor of the mall said.
Another tenant shared that, from what she knew, the other mall tenants had provided feedback to the mall's management.
Mall security have approached the crowd to advice them, but to no avail.
Not all tenants agreed on this, and one found that the crowd was usually cooperative and did no harm.
"Sometimes the crowd becomes too much and they would block the walkway. They would comply when told by security to move. I feel that it's alright for them to catch a breather," the tenant opined.
One tenant spoke about the lines that would form for the mall's bathroom.
"They would come inside to purchase water or use the bathroom. There would be lines and the bathrooms might, at times, become quite dirty," one staff at a salon shared.
