Coroner's inquiry into Indonesian student's death kicks off

SINGAPORE: The injuries sustained by Nanyang Technological University student David Widjaja who allegedly fell to his death after stabbing his supervisor in March were consistent with injuries caused by fall from height.

That's what the Widjaja family heard in court along with representatives from the Indonesian embassy and NTU on the first day of the coroner's inquiry into David's death.

According to government pathologist Dr Marian Wang, David also sustained some knife injuries and some superficial wounds consistent with injuries sustained during a struggle.

As for injuries on David's neck, she said there's no indication they were caused by strangulation.

Dr Wang performed the autopsy on David, in the presence of Associate Professor Gilbert Lau, senior consultant forensic pathologist. Both are from the Health Sciences Authority.

But David's family dispute her findings.

William Widjaja, David Widjaja's brother, said: "What the pathologist explained to us at the moment, is that the injuries were sustained from a fall from a height. I don't think that makes sense because if someone falls from a height, it won't cause only a bruising. The neck will be broken. Of course we want to find the truth."

David Widjaja fell to his death from a campus building in March, after he allegedly stabbed his final year project supervisor, Professor Chan Kap Luk.

The coroner's inquiry into his death is expected to last five days with 28 witnesses taking the stand.

Professor Chan will testify at the inquiry on Wednesday afternoon. - CNA
