Angry couple trashes fortune teller's stall

A couple trashed a fortune teller's stall outside the popular Kwan Im temple at Waterloo Street yesterday afternoon. The fortune teller, known only as a plump man in his 30s, had allegedly swindled the couple and had sex with the couple's daughter in a supposed exorcism.

The Chinese couple (age 50s) has a sickly daughter in her 20s. They had gone to the famous Kwan Im temple to pray for their daughter's health and were approached by the fortune teller who offered his help. The couple was surprised when the fortune teller somehow knew that they have a sickly daughter. He told them their daughter was possessed by spirits and had to be exorcised.

He offered to exorcise her at their home. After the deed, the couple paid the man a few hundred dollars for his "help", only to find out later from their daughter that she was made to have sex with him. The furious couple went back to the man's stall to confront him but could no longer find him. They resorted to trashing his stall.

The duo created a commotion as they overturned tables and chairs, then smashed the stall's altar and incense burner. Eyewitnesses say the couple was swearing loudly and the woman was heard wailing "You cheated our money and took advantage of our daughter!" No one went up to stop them from trashing the stall.

There are more than ten other fortune tellers in the area, many of whom say the missing fortune teller is a con man who knows nothing. The man has also been missing for the past few months.

"you wanna change your luck??? Then unsinkified yourself, you will be blessed and all good luck will come to you

I find this old quote by TonyChat quite funny...:D

The parents deserve to be slapped on the face for being too superstitious! Really pity that poor girl...

Agree... The parents must bear the full blame for their superstitious belief... The poor sickly gal will be tramautised forever by this experience..:(

Heard the fortune tellers there go mafu to protect them. Take pictures of them and someone will come and warn you away.

I agree the parents are naive and silly but we have to pity them as sometimes when people are desperate they'll just lose their human instincts and fall prey to such predators. But that evil fortuneteller there should no mercy on him. Trashing of the stall may be out of anger but is unwise, they should have patience and waited for him to appear again or sought help to trace his whereabouts. I'm sure there'll be people who can if they are willing to help.:p

the law of karma provides a good deal of comfort. it assumes that the universe is a fair place. it tells us that evil people and good people will eventually get what they deserve. however i find two flaws.
1)the goal of life according to this ancient belief is to escape samsara which means rebirth. this means that we are here because of past evil doings therefore we must suffer to pay for those evil doings. no matter what this strips us of free will and without free will how can we choose to do good or evil.
2)i believe to maintain the balance of the universe if we must return to endure past evil doings we must also return to be rewarded for doing good. so i ask if we do evil we must return and if we do good we must still return, then how can we possibly escape rebirth? ;)

Trusting a fortune teller is like trusting LKY and PAP. You end up getting worse.

Maybe the parents are at a loss for a cure and is willing to try anything. The conman will receive his pay in full when he meets the lord.

Good questions. My problem with Buddhism is reincarnation doesn't explain why the world's population increasing? Not to mention that there was a massive explosion in population since the mid 19th century. It doesn't make sense to say the increase is due to more souls being released from the other realms into the human realm as the only reason for population increases is that people are making more babies and dying later. Unless they are telling me that there are more people being pardoned from hell to get reborn as humans which certainly sounds farcical. Anyway, I seem to find problems with every religion.
