Marina Bay Sand heralded 2012 with a shout from the skies when a group of base jumpers leapt off the SkyPark Observation Deck at 8.30 am today.
In a space of 10 minutes, six daredevils took the plunge from the 57 th floor and successfully landed on the Bayfront Bridge.
The jumpers, five Americans, James Pouchert, Jeb Corliss, Anne Helliwell Amanda Vicharelli and Brendon Cork, and a Brazilian, Marta Empinotti are professionals who have completed more than 6,000 jumps between them
They have completed jumps from several world renowned icons such as Paris' Eiffel Tower, Seattle's Space Needle, PETRONAS Towers in Malaysia and Christ the Redeemers statue in Rio de Janeiro.
This current stunt was organised by Omer Mei-Dan, an orthopedic surgeon from Israel, who is an extreme sports enthusiast and professional BASE jumper himself.
On June 23, 2010, he successfully completed the world's first climbing race on a building facade to mark Marina Bay Sands' opening celebrations.
