Trump calls for investigation into Hillary Clinton, Russia connection

President Donald Trump took aim at the growing controversy over the investigation into his campaign's possible ties to Russia in flurry of tweets sent on Monday night.

"Why isn't the House Intelligence Committee looking into the Bill & Hillary deal that allowed big Uranium to go to Russia[?]" he asked in a message posted to Twitter.

He also cited "Russian speech money to Bill, the Hillary Russian 'reset,' praise of Russia by Hillary, or Podesta Russian Company," as possible further areas of inquiry.

"Trump Russia story is a hoax," he declared.

"Podesta Russian Company" appears to be a reference to calls from Rep. Louie Gohmert to investigate John Podesta, Hillary Clinton's election campaign chairman, for his ties to Russia. Gohmert has questioned Podesta's 2011 role in an investment fund with ties to the Russia government.

Former President Bill Clinton received $500,000 in 2010 from a Russian finance corporation called Renaissance Capital, one of many detailed in Peter Schweizer's book "Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich."

The latest tweets come after the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Devin Nunes, has come under fire for his handling of the investigation into possible ties between Russia and the Trump campaign during the election.

Late Monday, his Democratic counterpart, Rep. Adam Schiff, took the nearly unprecedented step of calling for Nunes to recuse himself from the probe.

Members of the House Intel Committee typically avoid partisan politics, but Nunes raised eyebrows when he shared new details of the investigation -- specifically that Trump associated may have been surveilled -- with the White House and the press before sharing them with his colleagues on the committee.

Nunes revealed on Monday that he reviewed sensitive files while on White House grounds.

Donald Trump Says Hillary Clinton Should Be Investigated for Russia Ties

Valentina Zarya
Mar 28, 2017

President Donald Trump wants to know why the Clintons aren't being investigated for their ties to Russia.

In a series of tweets Monday evening, the commander-in-chief posed the question of why the House Intelligence Committee wasn't "looking into the Bill & Hillary deal that allowed big Uranium to go to Russia, Russian speech money to Bill, the Hillary Russian 'reset,' praise of Russia by Hillary, or Podesta Russian Company."

Trump's first reference—the "Bill & Hillary deal that allowed big Uranium to go to Russia"—refers to a series of deals from 2009 to 2013 that gave Uranium One, a Russian state-owned nuclear energy company, control over 20% of U.S. uranium extraction. However, as The Washington Post notes, it is unclear what role the former secretary of state played in the deal overall: "There is no evidence Clinton herself got involved in the deal personally, and it is highly questionable that this deal even rose to the level of the secretary of state," reports the publication.

"Speech money" is a likely nod to the $500,000 a Russian investment bank tied to the Kremlin paid Bill Clinton for an address the former president delivered in Moscow. The "reset," meanwhile, refers to Hillary Clinton's attempt in 2009—largely viewed as unsuccessful—to improve U.S.-Russia relations.

Finally, "Podesta Russian company" refers to the The Daily Caller's recent allegations that former Hillary Clinton campaign chair John Podesta failed to disclose to the federal government that he received 75,000 shares in a Russian-financed company the same month he took a job with the Obama administration.

Trump's tweetstorm came as his own associates remain embroiled in investigations of what role Russia played in the president's 2016 campaign. The latest revelation came earlier Monday when a sanctioned Russian bank disclosed that its executives had met Trump's son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner back in December. Kushner has agreed to testify before the Senate committee investigating possible Russian interference.

RussiaGate: Hillary Clinton and John Podesta's Troubling Ties to Russia

Peter Schweizer, president of the Government Accountability Institute and the author of “Clinton Cash,” explained on Fox News Tuesday how a Russia connection to the Clinton campaign and Obama presidency is much bigger and more troubling than anything Democrats have accused Team Trump of.

During his appearance on “Fox & Friends,” Schweizer alleged that Clinton campaign chair John Podesta probably violated federal law when he failed to disclose his stock holdings in a Kremlin-funded company.

“In 2011, John Podesta joins the board of this very small energy company called Joule Energy based out of Massachusetts," Schweizer said. "About two months after he joins the board, a Russian entity called Rusnano puts a billion rubles -- which is about 35 million dollars -- into John Podesta’s company. Now, what is Rusnano? Rusnano is not a private company, Steve. It is a fund directly funded by the Kremlin. In fact, the Russian science minister called Rusnano Putin’s child. So you have the Russian government investing in one of John Podesta’s businesses in 2011, while he is an advisor to Hillary Clinton at the State Department.”

"Does anyone in Trump's circle rise to the level where there's this kind of money involved?" asked host Steve Doocy.

Schweizer answered that he hadn't seen anything like that yet. "Nobody that has an advisory role in the White House has had this money exchange. And certainly the money hasn't exchanged as far as we know while they have been advising the president," he said, pointing out that while he was an advisor in the Obama White House, Podesta owned stock shares with "Putin's Child" and failed to disclose it.

“So then in 2013, he goes to the White House, to be a special counselor to Barack Obama, and that requires that you, you know, have financial disclosures every year," he explained. "In his financial disclosure form in 2013, he not only fails to disclose these 75,000 shares of stock that he has in Joule Energy, which is funded in part by the Russian government. He also fails to disclose that he is on one of the three corporate boards that this entity has. It’s got this very complex ownership structure. He discloses he is on the company in Massachusetts, that is he on the board of a company in the Netherlands, but he fails to disclose that he is also on the executive board of the holding company. That’s a clear violation of the disclosure rules that I think needs to be looked at.”

He added, “What makes the Podesta case clear is there was a transfer of money and there was a transfer of a lot of money that stood to make John Podesta a lot of money. That is unique and that’s extremely troubling because at the time that transfer is taking place he is advising Hillary Clinton at the State Department. We know that from the Podesta emails that he is helping her make personnel decisions, speech decisions, policy decisions. He is meeting with her monthly. It’s a transfer of money from a foreign government, at the time that he is advising America’s chief diplomat, Hillary Clinton.”
