The Russian Embassy in the UK has filed a note to the Foreign Office, demanding an explanation for the "hostile" search of a Russian plane at London Heathrow Airport. It said the inspection was a provocation against Russia.
The Russian diplomatic office wants an explanation for the incident with a Russian Aeroflot plane that was searched by British authorities on Friday. During the search, the authorities demanded that the crew leave the aircraft, which is against regulations. So far, London has not provided an explanation for the move.

“The British officials tried to search the aircraft without the crew being present, something categorically prohibited by the rules in force,” the embassy said in a statement. It took an intervention from the diplomats for the captain to be able to stay on board.

“After an Embassy officer arrived at the airport long negotiations were conducted that allowed to ensure the right of the captain to take part in the search,” the statement reads.

UK's search of Russian plane violates international law – Aeroflot, lawmakers
Attempts by Russian diplomats to elicit a response from British authorities concerning the cause for the search have proven unsuccessful, the embassy said, noting that it has been unable to reach the Foreign Office for comment so far.

Lacking any feedback from UK officials, the embassy has, by default, concluded that the incident was “in one way or another connected with the hostile policy that the UK government is conducting with regard to Russia."

The searches came amid a flare-up in tensions between Moscow and London over the Skripal case. Days after the Salisbury incident, in which former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, were poisoned with what the UK claims was a Soviet-manufactured nerve agent, British authorities pointed a finger at Russia. Without producing evidence of Russia’s culpability, the UK unveiled a barrage of punitive measures against Moscow, including ordering the expulsion of 23 diplomats. Moscow has responded with tit-for-tat measures.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the search of the Aeroflot jet as “unacceptable, dangerous and irresponsible” and “another provocation” by London.

The only reaction from British authorities to the bizarre raid on the Russian plane came from Scotland Yard in a tweet. London’s Metropolitan Police said it was “aware of a story circulating on social media,”but claimed it had not conducted any searches "of an Airbus inbound from Moscow to Heathrow."

The plane’s pilot revealed the searches were conducted by the British border force, which came on board with a sniffer dog. The group of inspectors said they were looking for items that are illegal to transport by air, without providing any specifics, Vitaly Mitrofanov told Russian media. According to Mitrofanov, the officials did not present any papers or an explanation for their actions. While he initially allowed them to carry on with the searches, he rescinded the permission as soon as they insisted that he leave the plane.

The whole procedure took from five to seven minutes, the pilot said, adding that it was hard for him to oversee everything the inspectors were doing inside the aircraft since there were five or six of them, and he was the only one allowed to stay on board.

A plane by Russia's Aeroflot has been searched by British authorities at London Heathrow airport who gave no reason for the examination. Russia’s Foreign Ministry called it "provocation" as international rules were breached.
The British officials went aboard an Aeroflot plane, which arrived from Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow to the British capital on Thursday. The officers said they needed to inspect the plane without explaining the reasons for the action and demanded the crew to leave the plane. The captain refused to abandon the aircraft as it’s against regulations to inspect an aircraft in the absence of the crew. Yet the authorities proceeded with the search without releasing the commander from his cabin.

Skripal response: Moscow orders UK to cut diplomats to same number as Russian mission in Britain
“We’re speaking of another provocation by the British authorities,” Maria Zakharova, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, said, commenting on a search performed aboard an Aeroflot carrier plane in the British capital. “The behavior of the UK police clearly indicates the desire to conduct some kind of manipulations on board without witnesses."

The spokeswoman suggested the British authorities needed this "provocation" to save their "reputation, which was heavily undermined by the so-called Skripal case.” The relations between Moscow and London hit a new low after the UK accused Russia of poisoning double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter without any proof or waiting for the end of the investigation.

Zakharova called London’s actions "unacceptable, dangerous and irresponsible,” urging the international community to give them a proper evaluation. She added that Russian embassy staff was heading to the airport where the search of the plane took place.

Aeroflot said that the crew and staff from its London office will additionally inspect the plane after the British police conclude its activities aboard as the crew was forced out of the aircraft during the British inspection.

A shuttle bus that went up in flames forced the partial evacuation of a terminal at London's Stansted Airport in Essex.
Authorities at Stansted cordoned off the front of the international airport while emergency services tackled the blaze on a parked coach on Friday afternoon.

Footage from the scene shows flames and black smoke rising from a passenger set-down spot at the airport’s car park.

After the fire was extinguished, Stansted services began the re-screening of passengers through airport security.

Essex County Fire Services said a number of crews attended the fire, which was put out just after 5pm local time.

“The bus has been completely destroyed, while much of the front of the terminal building has suffered smoke damage,” the fire department said.

The airport confirmed that there were no injuries reported from the blaze, which was "caused by an engine electrical fault on the bus."

Vladimir Zhirinovsky has proposed having the US ambassador expelled from the famous Spaso House residence in Moscow, and suggested that his party should occupy the building after it becomes vacant.
“We have repeatedly proposed using asymmetrical measures. For example, we could reply to the expulsion of our diplomats by depriving the US Embassy in Moscow of the magnificent Spaso House mansion that is currently the US ambassador’s residence. After this, the building could be handed over to the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia,” the head of the Liberal Democratic Party, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, wrote on Telegram on Friday.

In the same post, Zhirinovsky wrote that it is wrong to only react to the hostile actions of other nations.

The comment came after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that Russia will expel 60 US diplomats and close the US Consulate in St. Petersburg in response to the US’ expulsion of the same number of Russian diplomats and the closure of the Russian Consulate in Seattle.

The wave of expulsions started in mid-March, as Britain announced that it was declaring 23 Russians – all diplomatic staff – persona non grata over the recent poisoning of former spy Sergey Skripal and his daughter Yulia. British authorities allege that Russia has a hand in this poisoning, but all requests from Moscow to provide some evidence to back these claims have so far been rejected.

Earlier, Zhirinovsky commented that the scandal is perhaps an artificial scare to create some kind of “fear factor” to help bring people together in the face of the migrant crisis and looming collapse of the European Union. He also noted that the US was benefitting from EU-Russia tensions by making the US seem more attractive for international investors.

The American intelligence services are hastily trying to recruit Russian diplomats expelled from the US over the Skripal case, Russia's Foreign Ministry said, slamming Washington's behavior as cynical and indecent.
The ministry sounded the alarm over "a sharp increase in provocative actions against Russian diplomats in the US." The ministry said that after the announcement that 60 Russian diplomats are set to leave the US, American secret services have “feverishly” been trying to contact them with various proposals.

"There's been a whole string of outrageous episodes" where the Russian diplomats "were offered 'help' – and not for free, but in exchange for secret relations 'on a mutually beneficial basis,'" the ministry said in a statement.

Moscow accused the US of "pulling a scheme" that involved the "the official authorities unjustly expelling Russian diplomats and the increasingly aggressive American security services immediately attempting to take advantage of this difficult moment for our people." The ministry described the American ploy as "thinly levied" and fruitless, adding that "such behavior looks cynical and disgusting as if Washington has completely ceased to understand the bounds of common decency."

Earlier this week, the US announced it would expel 60 Russian diplomats and close Russia's consulate in Seattle, as the Trump administration fulfilled the UK's calls to punish Russia over its alleged involvement in the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal on British soil. In a tit-for-tat response, Russia said on Thursday that 60 American diplomats would have to leave the country, and it would also close the US consulate in St. Petersburg.

In early March, Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, were poisoned in Salisbury with what the UK called a Soviet-designed nerve agent. Without a proper investigation being carried out, London accused Moscow of being behind the attack, expelled Russian diplomats and introduced other restrictions against the county. Britain urged its allies to follow suit and sanction Moscow as well, with German, France and Poland being among the countries to show Russian diplomats the door.

Moscow’s decision to have the UK downsize its diplomatic presence in Russia to be equal to that of Moscow in London means that it must cut over 50 jobs at the British mission, according to the Russian foreign ministry.
On Friday, Russia announced its response to the UK’s expulsion of 23 Russian diplomats that London linked to double agent Sergei Skripal’s poisoning. In addition to expelling 23 British diplomats, Moscow also gave London one month to downsize its diplomatic presence in Russia.

Skripal response: Moscow orders UK to cut diplomats to same number as Russian mission in Britain
The final number of staff in Russia should be equal to the number of staff at the Russian diplomatic mission in Britain. Similar measures were taken in response to the American expulsion of Russian diplomats over alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election in the US.

The exact number of jobs that the British will have to cut was not initially announced. Commenting on the move on Saturday, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that just over 50 people will have to be retired by the British foreign office due to the downsizing.

“We asked for parity. The Brits have 50 diplomats more than the Russians,” Zakharova told journalists.

The current round of escalation between Moscow and London started with the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury. British authorities said that the Skripals were injured by a Soviet-developed military-grade nerve agent and accused the Russian government of launching the attack, claiming that there was no other plausible explanation.

Without presenting any evidence publicly, London rallied its allies to support its campaign to punish Russia, including through the expulsion of Russian diplomats. The number people expelled by Britain was dwarfed in comparison to the 60 targeted by the US. Other nations kicked out between one and four diplomats, with the exception of Ukraine, which targeted 13 Russians. NATO also joined the initiative, expelling seven people.

The Kremlin has rejected allegations of its involvement and accused London of conducting an anti-Russian propaganda campaign on a flimsy pretext. Moscow says that the UK's reluctance to publish the actual data from the investigation or even share a sample of the poison used against the Skripals with Russia is highly suspicious and may even indicate London’s complicity in the attack.

On Saturday, the Russian Embassy in the UK sent a list of 14 question to the UK Foreign Ministry, demanding it to disclose such details as France’s role in the Skripal case investigation and how the UK got ahold of the samples of the nerve agent A-234 (also known as 'Novichok') needed to carry out comparison tests with the actual Soviet-era substance. Moscow also questioned if both the UK and France developed A-234 on their own.

Russia to expel over 50 British workers, deepening tensions between Kremlin and London

MOSCOW — More than 50 British diplomats and technical support staff will be expelled from Russia, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Saturday, claiming that the move will establish parity with Russia’s diplomatic mission in Britain.

“Russia offered parity,” spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said. “The Brits have just over 50 more people.”

The move clarified Russia’s response to Britain’s expulsion in mid-March of 23 Russian diplomats and ratchets up an already tense situation between Russia and the West over the March 4 poisoning of a former Russian double agent on British soil.

The former spy and his daughter were poisoned allegedly by a Soviet-designed nerve agent, Novichok, a weapon believed to be unique to Russia. Russia has flatly denied the allegations and offered a variety of counterclaims.

Russia had previously expelled 23 British diplomats before Saturday’s announcement.

[WorldViews: Britain’s expulsion of 23 Russian diplomats marks a return to Cold War ejections]

The latest expulsions were not unexpected. On Friday, Russia said it would limit the size of the British diplomatic mission to Russia to match that of Moscow’s mission in Britain. However, no figures were given, as Britain does not publish rosters of its embassies and consulates for security reasons.

Britain is not alone in facing the Kremlin’s retaliatory measures: 23 nations that supported Britain by expelling Russian diplomats were issued expulsion orders Friday. Russia described those actions as mirror responses.

In total, 59 diplomats from Germany, France and a number of other European nations are to be expelled.

In the past week, 27 nations joined Britain in expelling Russian diplomats. NATO and Georgia have also followed suit. At least 150 Russian diplomatic workers across the world have been handed expulsion orders.

The United States led the expulsion count with 60 Russian diplomats and added to its measures the closing of Russian Consulate in Seattle. Russia responded, expelling 60 U.S. diplomats and ordering the U.S. Consulate in St. Petersburg closed.

Tensions between Russia and Britain continue to escalate beyond the diplomatic realm. Friday night, the Russian Embassy in London said that an Aeroflot flight from London to Moscow was stopped for a search by British authorities. Russia has threatened to conduct similar searches of British Airways flights.

Meanwhile, the British Foreign Office has said it is considering granting Russia’s repeated requests for access to Yulia Skripal, daughter of former spy Sergei Skripal. Both were reported in critical condition after the March 4 attack.

British authorities said Thursday evening that Yulia’s condition was rapidly improving. Her father was described as still being in critical though stable condition.
