Android - Google's operating system for cellphones - is gaining on the BlackBerry, iPhone and Microsoft's Windows Mobile in the United States, according to online tracking firm ComScore.
While the latter three lost market share in the quarter ending May compared with the period before, the Android got a bigger piece of the pie, gaining 4 per cent. By absolute market share, BlackBerry still leads with 42 per cent, followed by the iPhone with 24 per cent. The Android, with 13 per cent, is a close fourth, just 0.2 percentage points after Windows Mobile.
SIGNIFICANCE
Yes, the Android is fourth, but expect it to overtake Windows phones soon. Without the overdue update of its version 7, the Microsoft platform is trailing
in buzz.
Even Apple will soon feel the Android's heat. With the iPhone 4's recent launch, Apple may be able to hold on to its market share. However, it only has one model and is up against the many handsets waving the Google flag, including the likes of HTC, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.
