SINGAPORE: The former Chief Financial Officer of JTC Corp, Andrew Kuan, has embarked on his second attempt to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility to run for the upcoming Presidential Election due by the end of next month.
Mr Kuan turned up at the Elections Department this morning to collect the forms.
He had failed to obtain the eligibility certificate in 2005, when he tried to oppose incumbent President SR Nathan.
Mr Kuan was disqualified by the Presidential Election Committee in 2005 for failing to meet the eligibility criteria.
The committee said Mr Kuan's seniority and responsibility as JTC's Chief Financial Officer were not comparable to those required by the Constitution.
A Presidential candidate is required to have had experience as the chairman or CEO of a statutory board, or of a company with a paid-up capital of at least S$100 million.
Mr Kuan, who had intended to contest the May general election as an independent candidate for the Joo Chiat single member constituency, withdrew from the contest to avoid a three-cornered fight.
So far, four other presidential hopefuls have stepped forward.
Three of them have already submitted their forms for the Certificate of Eligibility.
They are former Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Tony Tan, former Member of Parliament, Dr Tan Cheng Bock and the former CEO of NTUC Income, Mr Tan Kin Lian.
The fourth aspirant, former civil servant, Mr Tan Jee Say has yet to send in his forms, though he has already collected them from the Elections Department.
The final day to submit the forms for the eligibility certificate is within three days after the Writ of Election is issued.
