Will London change all the buses to China? British operator: This is great

During his visit to China, the current British Prime Minister "bombed" a Chinese enterprise, and its electric bus made up 50% of the country's market share. England is the birthplace of buses. In the early 1831, Walter Hancock, the British made the world's first bus powered by steam. And its very representative "red" red double decker bus is regarded as a British "national treasure" and a symbol of London.

In 1934, China imported the first double decker bus from the UK. Now, China has begun exporting new energy vehicles to the UK. London, England, is now living with nearly 9 million people, and about 9200 buses are in active service.

The mayor of London is now determined to make great efforts to control air pollution and promise that all London buses will be upgraded to pure electric buses by 2037. At present, 51 pure electric buses produced by the Chinese Byd Co are running on the streets of London, accounting for more than 90% of all the local pure electric buses.

"Manufacturing in China is helping Britain carry out a road air cleaning revolution," said the general manager of London's old bus operator, Go-Ahead London. In fact, the electricity consumed by the pure electric bus is even lower than the Byd Co's design estimate, which is really great. "

It is by virtue of the level of technology and manufacturing ability, the Byd Co in September 2017, held the British low-carbon cars Cooperation Organization awards ceremony, one gains the "low carbon heavy vehicle annual award" and "best of the year award" two awards, highlighting the strong brand strength China. BYD's "the story", called the "rate of international textbook case".

China is steadily moving forward to the big manufacturing country, and "made in China" is also recognized by more countries in the world. Not only Britain, the old industrial power, and even a few countries known for its manufacture, has also thumbs up China.

In the variety show, Japan has not only once proved the important proportion of "made in China" in Japan. Even a Japanese company's fake news, which has been exposed again recently, is also in disguised as "made in China".

These are just like BYD "Chinese manufacturing to the world as a microcosm of the so-called, a short step, a thousand miles; not small streams, no seas. With the proposal of the "China made 2025" national strategy, more and more Chinese enterprises will appear on the international stage, and the overseas road made in China will also go wider and wider. London's Iconic Red Double-Decker Buses to be Made in China
by China.new
201110085.jpg

Tourists traveling to the UK for the 2012 Olympic Games expect to do some sightseeing while in the British capital, and there's no better way to see the sights of London than from the open top of a red double-decker bus.

Won't they be surprised to find the “national symbol” they're riding on is one of 34 new open-top double-decker buses made in and exported from China.

201110081.jpg

The landmark deal signed on September 29th between Britain's Big Bus Tours sightseeing company and China's Anhui Ankai Automobile Co., Ltd. is notable in that it's the first time Chinese-made double-decker buses have been approved for entry and operation in the UK.

Though Anhui Ankai has had success exporting a wide range of buses to nations around the globe, they've been shut out of Britain due to the country's more stringent certification regulations.

201110082.img_assist_custom.jpg

Big Bus Tours was able to gain approval from the UK's Vehicle Certification Agency and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency based on a single sample bus, which passed every requirement with flying colors.

With the regulatory path cleared, Big Bus Tours was able to contract with Anhui Ankai to provide 34 open-top double-decker buses to be used for sightseeing tours of London this coming summer during the Olympic Games.

201110084.jpg

The contract to provide updated versions of what has become a national symbol of Britain is more than just a feather in the cap for Anhui Ankai.

“This cooperation shows that the technical level of our products has totally complied with EU (and UK) requirements,” stated Wang Xianfeng, vice president of Anhui Ankai. “Meanwhile, this is the first time that Chinese electromechanical products have gained access to the core market in the EU.”

Members of the “if it ain't British, it's crap” crowd may decry the fact that a national icon like the red double-decker bus is made in a foreign nation but consider this: a red “London Bus” made under any other name, still looks much the same. Sure ideas can be copied – icons, on the other hand, are timeless. (via Global Times and Ankai.com)

BYD London double-decker bus

When it comes to buses, few are more recognizable than London's iconic double deckers.

And now these distinctive vehicles are going electric.

Transport for London (TfL), the British capital's transit agency, is placing five electric buses into service as the city continues to look for ways to reduce air pollution.

The five buses were built by Chinese manufacturer BYD, and were unveiled earlier this week.

"We think it's the first fully electric double-decker bus in the world," TfL surface-transportation director Leon Daniels told the Independent.

Single-decker electric buses began operating on some routes in London last July, but double deckers are just now being introduced into service.

BYD London double-decker bus

Each 10.2-meter (33.4-foot) bus has a reported range of 180 miles, which officials say will adequate for a full day's operation without recharging.

That takes four hours, and will be done at night when the buses are out of service and electricity is cheaper due to off-peak rates.

The buses can hold 54 seated passengers, and an additional 27 standees.

While TfL recently introduced a completely redesigned double-decker bus known as the New Routemaster, the BYD buses were reportedly built using a more traditional design due to ongoing issues with that version.

The BYD buses are expected to cost 350,000 pounds ($507,000) each.

They will operate solely on the London system's Route 98 for now. TfL hasn't confirmed plans for more, but it will likely expand its fleet of electric single-decker buses.

By 2020, all single-decker buses operating in central London, the city's core, will be "zero-emission," the agency says.
Meanwhile, the double-decker bus isn't the only iconic London vehicle going electric with Chinese help.

Last fall, the London Taxi Company unveiled a range-extended electric version of its signature black cab.

Called the TX5, it was designed with help from LTC owner Geely (the Chinese carmaker that also owns Volvo), and will be built at a new British factory funded by the company.

LONDON - Europeans are chasing a new fashion to take China-designed new energy coaches as a fresh means of transportation as Europe strengthens its efforts to fight gas emission.

Amid fierce competition, Chinese new energy car manufacturers have won favor from European clients thanks to their fashionable look, reliable quality and reasonable prices.

In 2016, China manufactured and sold over 28 million vehicles, ranked No 1 globally for eight consecutive years. More importantly, the annual production of new energy vehicles in China has surpassed 517,000, with the BYD, for instance, exporting its coaches and battery technology to more than 50 countries around the world.

Big success in Britain

Chinese carmaker BYD has succeeded in deploying its electric coaches in London, Liverpool and Nottingham since it partnered with the Britain's biggest coach manufacturer Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) in 2015 and got an initial order of 51 buses from the London transport authority.

At Waterloo station in central London, passengers are lining up to take Bus 521, one of the routes in London with green buses powered by BYD battery and technology.

"It's quite cool. It's a lot quicker and a lot nicer than the tube... It should be a better option over others who move on the transportation," said Lora Jarrett who enjoys taking such buses.

Dan Gill, another commuter who has been taking this bus for about two years, said he strongly favored electric buses for environmental concerns.

"It is smooth and comfortable... It is clearly a lot better for the local environment, in terms of the pollution compared to diesel ones." Gill said, adding that he looks forward to more electric buses in London.

"We believe that the BYD's battery and related technology are state of the art currently and importantly are well proven in thousands of their pure electric buses in service around the world," John Trayner, general manager of British public transportation operator Go-Ahead, told Xinhua.

Trayner said his company is satisfied with the performance of these coaches and it just ordered another 47 buses following the last contract in 2015.

According to the BYD, the company has already received orders for 201 electric coaches in the Britain, and the BYD's electric buses have taken up 70 percent of electric coaches in London and 43 percent in Britain.

"The combination of the BYD's electric power-train and batteries and the ADL's bodywork provides us with high quality buses which have proved reliable in operation," said Trayner.

Popular beyond Britain

It is not just in Britain that Chinese buses are welcomed. China-designed coaches have also been running on the streets of Netherlands and Bulgaria, proven to be a reliable and economical alternative for transportation.

In 2016, a batch of 110 buses from another leading Chinese bus maker, Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Co, was successfully delivered to Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria in the southeast of Europe.

Slav Monov, executive director of Sofia autobus company Stolichen Autotransport Plc, described Chinese buses as very cost efficient, economical, safe and comfortable. A total of 110 Chinese coaches have gone into service on eight lines in Sofia.

The diesel buses order of nearly 20 million U.S. dollars was taken through a public procurement procedure, and the buses have been carrying about a quarter of the customers of Stolichen Autotransport, Monov told Xinhua.

He said the buses, made by Yutong, are a very good balanced product with the best price-quality ratio, adding his company was looking for the best price-quality ratio in order to serve a greater number of residents.

This approach was particularly important for a developing economy like Bulgaria's, Monov said.

Zdravko Dimitrov, an engineer responsible for the technical maintenance of these buses in Sofia, said, "Those coaches from China gives stable performance with full consideration for all passengers and the cost of maintenance is affordable."

Win with quality

The success of Chinese buses in the European market stems from high quality, advanced technology and aftersales services.

Buses from China are manufactured strictly according to the standards of the European Union where rigorous standards on vehicle emission are implemented.

"Considering the UK now is undergoing a revolution of clean air, the electric coaches from China have proved to be more economical and environment-friendly than diesel ones. In fact, the electricity those coaches need is lower than the manufacturer predicted," said Trayner.

Britain announced last month that sales of new diesel and gas cars would be banned by 2040, offering new possibilities to leading new energy car manufacturers like the BYD amid Europe's battle against the environmental pollution by the internal combustion engine.

Tim Jackson, British CEO of public transport operator RATP, said a thorough evaluation has been carried out before his company decided to select the BYD-ADL product for launching the electric operations in London.

"This would help us better fulfil the company's promise of saving energy and reducing gas emission," Jackson said.

Only just 4 yrs ago Englishman try to KPKB about making their own electric buses in 2014, now 2018 they lost to Chinese.

First British built electric buses enter service
30 July 2014
Mayor officially welcomes the first British built, pure electric buses to enter service on London's roads
  • The four buses, in service on route H98, deliver significant air quality benefits due to zero tail pipe emissions
  • Lower running and maintenance costs compared to a diesel single deck bus
  • Continuing commitment to trial emission free transport in the capital
The Mayor of London officially welcomed the introduction of four British built, pure electric buses yesterday evening (29 July) at an air quality event at The Mansion House.

The four Optare MetroCity single deck buses are currently being trialled on route H98, which operates between Hayes and Hounslow.

They are manufactured by Optare, part of the Hinduja Group, a British bus manufacturer based in Sherburn in Elmet, North Yorkshire, and are part funded from the Department of Transport's (DfT) Green Bus Fund.

The buses demonstrate Transport for London's (TfL) continuing commitment to trialling new emission free technology in the capital.

The introduction of the four pure electric Optare MetroCity buses is the first step of the Mayor's plan for all single deck buses in central London to be zero emission at tailpipe, as part of the world's first Ultra Low Emission Zone, from 2020. This brings the total number of electric buses now in service in London to six. The first two electric buses in London have been operating on routes 507 and 521 since last December. A further two are expected to enter service later this year. Passengers will notice that pure electric buses offer much lower noise and vibration levels compared to diesel vehicles, with TfL benefiting from lower maintenance and running costs.

These buses have zero tail pipe emissions, resulting in lower carbon emissions and improved air quality. The trials will help TfL develop plans for greater use of electric buses in central London in the future, contributing to the Mayor's vision of a central London Ultra Low Emission Zone.

Mike Weston, TfL's Director of Buses, said: "The introduction of these new pure electric vehicles is part of our continuing assessment of the technology, to ensure it can handle the capital's challenging operational environment. We will be closely monitoring the results of the trials, which may help us adopt this new clean technology more widely in London."

Mr. Gopichand Hinduja, Co-Chairman of the Hinduja Group, said: "Optare's MetroCity electric vehicle is a prime example of the UK's manufacturing excellence, technology and innovation coming together to provide a zero emissions solution to improve air quality in London. We look forward to seeing more of these vehicles operating in London and cities across the UK and Europe in the future. Optare is crucial to Hinduja Group's flagship company, Ashok Leyland's future global strategy: It is the hub for the company's expansion in Europe and Worldwide."

These electric bus trials will be used to establish whether the technology can stand up to the rigours of operating in an intense urban environment such as London. The manufacturer's tests demonstrated that while the initial capital cost of these vehicles was more than that of standard diesel, the significantly lower running and maintenance costs would offset this within the typical lifetime of the vehicle.

The buses take around five hours to fully charge overnight, or two hours using fast charge technology and have a range of up to 100 miles depending on operating conditions.

The electric bus trial is one of the many measures the Mayor has introduced to make London's bus fleet more environmentally friendly, including the operation of zero emission hydrogen buses on Route RV1 between Covent Garden and Tower Gateway and delivering Europe's largest hybrid bus fleet. Around eight hundred hybrid buses now operate on the capital's roads, including the New Routemasters, with more being introduced in a rolling programme.

By 2016 there will be more than 1,700 hybrid buses in service on London's streets representing 20 per cent of the total bus fleet.

TfL has also recently completed an extensive retrofit programme over 1,000 older buses which involves fitting them with an innovative system called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), reducing emissions of harmful oxides of nitrogen (NOx) by up to 88 per cent.

  • Optare Plc is a bus manufacturer based in Sherburn in Elmet, North Yorkshire. Its parent company Ashok Leyland, part of the Hinduja Group, is ranked within the top five global bus manufacturers. Optare designs, manufactures and sells advanced single deck and double deck buses for a global market place
  • Route H98 is operated by London United and runs between Hayes and Hounslow
  • The Department of Transport's (DfT) Green Bus Fund was set up to support bus companies and local authorities to introduce low carbon vehicles that will have a positive effect on the environment. The money from the Green Bus Fund is used to supplement existing budget and enables companies and local authorities to purchase greener vehicles in place of standard diesel vehicles
  • More electric buses are anticipated to follow as London is engaged in a partnership funding bid with seven other cities in Europe to trial a range of pure electric and hybrid vehicle technologies and charging techniques
  • These electric buses are fitted with a small diesel fuelled heater that will be used to heat the interior of the buses in the winter months. This will produce a limited amount of emissions and is currently more efficient than using some of the battery capacity to heat the vehicle vehicles

Big Bus Tours was able to gain approval from the UK's Vehicle Certification Agency and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency based on a single sample bus, which passed every requirement with flying colors.

A single sample can be made to pass any inspection. However a single sample produced specifically for the purpose of certification is not representative of the quality of mass production.

Chinese are good at producing shit and when the bulk orders start to arrive there'll be broken down buses all over the place within days of the fleet being commissioned.
