A company in Arizona, US, has announced the creation of an iPhone app aimed at telling users the truth about their own ugliness. The 'Ugly Meter', created by programming company Dapper Gentlemen of Gilbert, Arizona, scans photos users take of their faces and then rates their ugliness on a scale of 1 to 10. The programme also adds a comment on the rating, including a statement for a 10 score reading: "You're so ugly, when you walk by the bathroom, the toilet flushes." Bloggers who tested the application with photos of celebrities deemed to be among the world’s most attractive people got varied results. Angelina Jolie scored a nearly perfect 2.

The Ugly Meter is ranked seventh among the top applications in Apple's entertainment category

"You’re so hot that you make the sun jealous," Ugly Meter opined under its rating of the actress. But her significant other, Hollywood hunk Brad Pitt, scored a nearly imperfect 8 on the ugly scale. "You could walk into a haunted house and come out with a paycheck," Ugly Meter observed. "We’ve done some serious games in the past and just wanted to do something funny," said Eugene Overline, co-owner and lead programmer of Dapper Gentlemen.

"You take it out and you won’t get your phone back for an hour."
Overline said the 99-cents app is based on science linking symmetry to beauty but is limited by the power of the iPhone’s camera. "We took the aspects that we could integrate into the computer programme," he said. "It’s accurate enough to be fun."
