Patients and their loved ones have a right to understand the full implications of the treatment, which includes the financial aspect. This is part of obtaining truly informed consent. If a patient undertakes an extremely expensive treatment that the family cannot afford, it will lead to severe financial hardship down the line, which the doctor wants to help them avoid.
