Nursing student stabbed at Jurong West

SINGAPORE: A 20-year-old woman was stabbed by an assailant on Friday morning at Jurong West Street 42.

Pavithra Gunashekaran, a nursing student at Nanyang Polytechnic, was brought to the National University Hospital (NUH) with injuries to her arms and neck.

The victim was attacked as she stepped out of a lift at Block 415.

She is believed to have been slashed several times by a 30-year-old cleaner.

Police responded to a call for help at around 8.40am and the assailant was arrested.

According to the victim's mother, Ms Gunashekaran met the suspect during her attachment at a hospital.

He was said to have asked for her hand in marriage the night before the stabbing, but left after the police spoke to him.

The next morning, the victim was attacked on her way to school.

Mrs Guna, the victim’s mother, said at the time of the incident, she thought she heard her daughter screaming.

“So I told my husband, I think my daughter is screaming, can we go (downstairs)? My husband saw it (the incident), pulled (the assailant’s) shirt, and asked him, what are you doing to my daughter? There was (a lot of) blood. Then the ambulance and policemen came and helped us.”
