The novel coronavirus has now infected over 142,000 people in the U.S. — more than any other country in the world, per Johns Hopkins data.
The big picture: COVID-19 had killed over 2,400 people in the U.S. by Sunday night. That's far fewer than in Italy, where over 10,000 people have died — accounting for a third of the global death toll. The number of people who've recovered from the virus in the U.S. exceeded 2,600 Sunday evening.
What they're saying: President Trump said Sunday his administration would extend its "15 Days to Slow the Spread" guidelines until April 30.
  • National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Anthony Fauci told CNN models suggest COVID-19 could infect millions of Americans and kill 100,000–200,000, though he stressed the projections are "a moving target."
  • Trump said the death toll could've hit 2.2 million without social distancing and stimulus measures, and it'd signal "we all together have done a very good job" if the number is limited to that amount.
Between the lines: U.S. testing capacity has increased as more commercial labs pledge to up production. More available tests mean more COVID-19 cases will be discovered and reported.
  • America needs to build and assemble medical equipment in the next few weeks to ward off some of the worst-case scenarios.
What's happening: Nearly 200 cities reported a desperate need for face masks, ventilators and other medical equipment, according to a survey released Friday from the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
    • A plane from Shanghai arrived at JFK Airport in New York Sunday morning carrying 12 million gloves, 130,000 N95 masks, 1.7 million surgical masks, 50,000 gowns, 130,000 hand sanitizer units, and 36,000 thermometers.
  • New Yorkhas become the epicenter in the U.S., and has now reported more than 44,500 infections with hospitalizations increasing by more than 1,000 per day. About half of the deaths in the U.S. have been in New York.
    • New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has extended work-from-home orders in the state until Apr. 15 and says they will reevaluate every two weeks.
  • The CDC announced Saturday night a domestic travel advisory for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, urging residents to "refrain from non-essential domestic travel for 14 days effective immediately."
  • A second wave of American cities, including Boston, Detroit, New Orleans and Philadelphia, reported influxes of cases on Saturday.
  • Trump has invoked the Defense Production Act to require General Motors to build ventilators. He appointed White House trade adviser Peter Navarro to enforce the deal.
  • GM and other manufacturers are ramping up ventilator production, with significant volumes unlikely until the end of April or later, Axios' Joann Mullerreports — too late, perhaps, to make a difference in emerging hot spots.
  • The first federal prisoner to die from coronavirus was reported on Sunday from a correctional facility in Louisiana.
  • Hospital ship the USNS Comfort is to due to arrive in Manhattan Monday and begin treating patients in New York City on Tuesday, Trump said. "The people with the virus will not be on ship, the ship will be used for people having operations and other things," Trump said.
  • The USNS Mercy hospital ship landed in the Port of Los Angeles Friday. California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the ship would "potentially" start taking patients on Saturday.
State government responses: Multiple states have ordered people to stay at home, and most of those are states with Democratic governors.
  • Parks and outdoor spaces are getting overcrowded, despite states' advice for people to stay home.
Schools: At least 57,000 K-12 schools across the U.S. have closed or will close for up to weeks at a time due to the coronavirus.
Emergency declarations: Trump approved disaster declarations for Massachusetts, Michigan, Kentucky and Guam on Saturday.
What to watch: Americans will get one-time direct deposits from the $2.2 trillion stimulus package of up to $1,200, and married couples will receive $2,400, plus an additional $500 per child.

More sailors aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt test positive for coronavirus, officials say

More sailors aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier currently in the western Pacific have tested positive for coronavirus and officials fear the number will continue to rise.

There are now 38 Navy sailors who have been infected with COVID-19, U.S. officials told Fox News on Sunday.

Early last week, there were only three known cases aboard the massive warship with a crew of 5,000. It marked the first U.S. naval vessel at sea to have infected people onboard.

Early Friday, the "Big Stick" -- as the carrier is called -- pulled into port in Guam days ahead of schedule in order to disinfect the ship, transport infected sailors to a local hospital and order more bulk testing of the crew.

The Navy's top officer said the stop in Guam was "previously scheduled" for maintenance.

"We expect additional positive tests," Adm. Mike Gilday, chief of naval operations, said in a statement Thursday. Gilday says none of the sailors infected so far are "seriously ill."

Like cruise ships, it's nearly impossible to isolate sailors at sea or practice social distancing while launching F/A-18 Super Hornets from the flight deck or standing watch on the Nimitz-class carrier's two nuclear reactors.

"There aren't staterooms for all 5,000 sailors," one Navy official quipped.

So far, no pilots on the ship have been infected, officials say.

3 US NAVY SAILORS ABOARD THEODORE ROOSEVELT TEST POSITIVE FOR CORONAVIRUS, DEFENSE OFFICIALS SAY

The Teddy Roosevelt Strike Group had previously sailed through the South China Sea, launching jets round the clock to send a message to Beijing.

It's not clear if the virus has spread to any of the destroyer escorts in the group since leaving San Diego in early January.

Deploying with the carrier is the guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill and guided-missile destroyers Russell, Paul Hamilton, Pinckney, Kidd and Rafael Peralta. Most of those warships, armed with hundreds of Tomahawk cruise missiles, will remain at sea while the carrier is moored in Guam -- a stop that could be weeks long, officials say.

The strike group visited Vietnam earlier this month after assessing the risk to the crew to be low, according to Navy officials.

The Navy's only other carrier in the western Pacific also has cases of the virus onboard, Fox News first reported Friday. The Japan-based USS Ronald Reagan is in port right now, and the two sailors who tested positive are no longer on board, according to officials.

The positive cases were discovered Friday and forced the naval base located an hour outside Tokyo to be locked down over the weekend, with thousands of American sailors ordered to remain on the ship for 48-hours.

The virus has also spread to an Air Force base in Okinawa, Japan, with at least three known positive cases reported.
