WASHINGTON: The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is looking into Boeing’s supply chain after confirming on Wednesday (Jan 17) that the door plug blown out of an Alaska Airlines plane was made in Malaysia.

The door plug on the Boeing 737 MAX 9 was produced by a Spirit facility in Malaysia. Spirit AeroSystems is Boeing's main subcontractor.

NTSB chair Jennifer Homendy said the agency is investigating the entire supply chain – from the transportation from Malaysia to the US, the shipment by rail to Boeing’s facility in Renton and the installation of the door plug onto the fuselage.

Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke said on Friday that the country’s civil aviation authority has offered its assistance to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
He added that although the door plug was made in Malaysia, the component was approved by the FAA.

“So even though it is manufactured in Malaysia, the approval of the product is under FAA,” Mr Loke said, as quoted by the New Straits Times.

“The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia had proactively reached out to the FAA to offer their assistance following reports that the door plug was confirmed as being made in Malaysia,” he added.

Alaska Airlines flight 1282 was about halfway to its cruising altitude on Jan 5 when the door plug of the Boeing 737 MAX 9 blew out, leaving a gaping hole through which items flew out.

US Senate Commerce Committee chair Maria Cantwell said she plans to hold a hearing on the issue and wants to make sure the FAA is ensuring strong oversight of Boeing. She had pressed the FAA to conduct an audit of Boeing safety issues.

"This investigation needs to find out where the mistake was, what caused this accident, and critically what needs to be done to make sure it doesn't happen again," said Senator Ted Cruz, the top Republican on the Commerce Committee.

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun visited Spirit's production facilities in Wichita on Wednesday for an employee town hall alongside Spirit's CEO, Pat Shanahan.

Speaking to about 270 factory workers, engineers and other employees, Shanahan said Spirit would "make changes and improvements" and "will restore confidence”.

Calhoun said, according to Boeing: "We're going to get better, not because the two of us are talking, but because (of) the engineers at Boeing, the mechanics at Boeing, the inspectors at Boeing, the engineers at Spirit, the mechanics at Spirit, the inspectors at Spirit."

The two executives answered several questions from employees, ranging from how lessons from the incident could influence future airplane designs, and whether Spirit and Boeing were united on a path forward, said a source in the room.
Boeing on Tuesday named retired US Navy Admiral Kirkland H Donald to advise the planemaker's CEO on improving quality control.

The door was intact and in one piece. Whatever held it, they say it was the bolts, could not be found. If there was a stress failures, bits of the bolts should remain with airplane body. Only the failed parts would be missing.

This is just like israel accusing malaysia of training hamas to para glide. Para gliding is not scrutinised hobby. Anyone can do it if location is suitable,.
