The woman was left traumatised and is afraid to leave her own house now.
On the evening of Halloween (Oct. 31), a woman in Singapore encountered a "terrifying" experience that left her traumatised.
She was waiting for her brother outside his unit in Chinatown when she heard a commotion behind her.
Her sister-in-law and brother were shouting and confronting a man who immediately took off running. She later learned that the man was allegedly secretly taking photos and videos of her from the back.
When her brother caught up with the man, he supposedly discovered numerous videos of other unsuspecting people in the man's phone, as well as videos of the woman.
They called the police and the man was subsequently arrested.
The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, shared with Mothership that the incident left her traumatised, and she is now afraid to leave her own house. What happened
When the man took off running, the woman’s brother sprinted toward the staircase to chase after him. After catching up to him, her brother discovered that the man’s phone supposedly contained numerous videos of other victims — people changing in their own homes, secretly recorded by zooming in from his unit.
The videos taken of the woman had been filmed from another level, where she had been recorded from above. When confronted, the man supposedly admitted that he had been following her for about 30 minutes because he “found her pretty.”
The woman claimed he repeatedly begged to be let go, saying that he “had not done what he intended to do yet” and asking for another chance.
"It still haunts me to think about what could have happened if my brother and sister-in-law hadn’t come home when they did," the woman said. They immediately called the police, and the man was arrested.
She believes the man is 38 years old and lives in the same neighbourhood.
In response to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said that they were alert to a case of voyeurism at the area at about 6:55pm.
"A 38-year-old man was arrested in relation to the case. Police investigations are ongoing," SPF said.Sharing her story
The woman said she had lived in neighbourhood for 20 years and her home had always been the one place she felt completely safe."I know almost everyone here, and I never once thought something like this could happen so close to me," she said.
Now, the sense of safety is gone and she is often scared of something bad happening every time she leaves the house."I catch myself constantly looking around or checking if someone’s watching me. I don’t even feel at ease in my own home anymore," she said.
What scares her the most is the fear that the man may come back to find her out of "anger or revenge".
She has started to avoid leaving the house now, she added.
"I’m sharing this to raise awareness: please always stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. You never know who might be watching or following you. It’s always better to be safe than sorry."Top photos courtesy of Mothership reader
