I learnt a cultural lesson during house calls today as I visited the Tan household. The 7th day of the Lunar New Year is known as "renri" or the birth of mankind. Some Chinese - Hokkiens who trace their ancestry to Fujian province in China in particular - prepare offerings of sugar cane to "Tiangong" or the Celestial Emperor on the same day or a day or two later, which coincides with Tiangong's birthday. One centuries-old legend has it that pirates attacked the Fujian coast forcing the people to hide in sugarcane plantations to escape their certain death. In a show of thanks and gratitude, they offered sugarcane to Tiangong for keeping them out of harm's way. For this reason, many Hokkiens offer sugarcane when they pray to Tiangong up to this day. I can't put finger on it, but I really appreciate it the preservation of traditions and culture, regardless of faith/religion, which keep people rooted to values that are held dear.

The day started very early in Eunos yesterday! Since 6am, our volunteers have been bustling about in preparation for the Oranges Distribution Event, an annual activity conducted as part of the Lunar New Year celebrations! Member of Parliament Mr Pritam Singh made his rounds around Blk 630 Bedok Reservoir Market and shops within Eunos to wish residents and stall owners a prosperous and happy new year. Several calligraphers were also invited to draw beautiful and auspicious messages for residents. Our volunteers also gathered to teach residents some simple handicraft that they may use to decorate their homes, such as lanterns made out of red packets (angbao) and oranges made from netting. It was an eventful morning, and we thank everyone for participating!
