According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, in 2012 around 7.2% of people in the US were suffering from alcoholism. There are around twice as many men who suffer from it than there are women. However, there are no two cases of alcohol abuse that are the same. One person may drink just as much as a problem drinker and it may pose no issues to their lives or relationships. So, do you know the signs of alcoholism?

The DSM-5 ('The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition'), published by the American Psychiatric Association, points out key symptoms. There are also many others that aren't included but are widely considered to be symptoms.

It rages around the world -

The population of people that alcoholism affects in the US is astronomical. It is also a massive killer throughout the rest of the world.

It's not about frequency or volume -

An important distinction is that there is no frequency or volume included in the definition of alcoholism.

It's more about it being used to cope -

It’s more so about certain features of alcohol becoming a problem in your life, like not being able to cope without a drink.

Drink sickness affecting work -

One of the standout features of this type of problem is when it begins negatively impacting important factors of your life.

Putting yourself in dangerous situations -

Heavy drinking causes people to lose their inhibitions in more ways than one, meaning that they put themselves in dangerous situations, like drinking and driving.

Drinking more or for longer than intended -

This is common for people who like to drink. The danger is that other areas of their lives suffer, as well as their physical and mental health.

Tried to quit, but couldn't -

This is the most common feature of someone who is struggling with alcohol addiction or alcohol misuse. However, most people suffering from the disease won't admit it.

The after-affects -

One symptom of alcohol misuse is that a person's life is inhibited during the period of getting over the alcohol.

Giving up important and enjoyable areas of life to drink -

This is a huge one for budding alcoholics. People who are becoming addicted to alcohol tend to slowly wean out the other areas of their lives that are healthy and that they enjoy.

I drink two glasses of single malt neat every night. Anything wrong with that?

Depression and anxiety -

Drinking alcohol in large amounts poisons the brain, and it's not a huge surprise that heavy drinkers will begin to experience mental health issues.

Blackouts -

Passing out from drinking or blacking out (not remembering what happened) is a huge warning sign. Not only is this behavior extremely dangerous, but it's also an indicator that alcohol has a tremendous hold over the person.

Depression and anxiety -

Drinking alcohol in large amounts poisons the brain, and it's not a huge surprise that heavy drinkers will begin to experience mental health issues.

Any substance taken IN EXTREME will most certainly cause mental issues, even something as simple as a panadol, for relief. Ultimately, it is about MODERATION, in ALL kinds of food intake, be natural/organic or man-made, so long as it is NOT hallucinogenic such as Cannabis, Opium, Cocaine - PLANT based opioids, or man-made such as Fentanyl, etc, which are highly addictive & alters the Human mind, robbing him/her of her will & life.

Do consider, if wine/beers which are alcohol based substances, & at worse - 5% alcohol content for beers, & 40% alcohol content such as whisky which NO one drinks neat & need to be further diluted with ice or soft drinks, non-addictive & often drank in moderation to relieve mental issues temporarily, WHAT would happen if they have no access to such substances to relieve their minds temporarily or have at least a needed good sleep to recuperate their body systems in our highly pressured lifestyle of living for evolution & progress?

The issue of mental health does not lay directly with non-hallucinogenic substances. Addictive hallucinogenic drugs are another issue. The ROOT of mental health lays within the CONFIDENCE of an individual - his/her mental strength to cope with adversities & challenges daily or the encouragement, exemplified by loved ones & others as no Human is born out of a vacuum.

Taking away such non-hallucinogenic substances will NOT save any lives. The solution lays in a WIDER context of HOW we can help fellow Humans to cope & not rely heavily on substances instead, & worse if they go to the extreme over substances for relief, for the evolution of Humanity, which will involve education, costs, social governances & commitment to funding for research to eradicate pressures from political-economic-socio issues , etc.

Tunnel vision -

Another symptom is alcohol completely taking over the person's thoughts, much like nicotine to a tobacco smoker.

Relationships and home life -

Heavy drinking damages people's home lives and relationships hugely because it stops them from being able to carry out their responsibilities.

Interrupted sleep -

People who experience physical and psychological withdrawals from alcohol will commonly have problems with sleeping.
