AirAsia X Lands In Wrong Seoul Airport
AirAsia X has apologised after passengers on flight D7 506 from Kuala Lumpur to Seoul expected to arrive at Incheon International Airport but instead touched down 35km away at Gimpo International Airport. The airline said the diversion was due to adverse weather, air traffic congestion and the need to refuel.
According to reports, the captain informed passengers they had landed safely at Incheon, but phone location checks soon revealed they were at Gimpo. The cabin crew were reportedly unaware of the situation until informed by passengers. A video circulating online showed an announcement that the diversion was an emergency measure, as the aircraft was running low on fuel.
In its official statement, AirAsia X clarified that the diversion was unavoidable and necessary to ensure safety. The airline will offer travel vouchers to affected guests. “We thank our guests for their understanding and cooperation during this operational adjustment, which was necessary to ensure the safety of everyone on board,” it said.
The incident sparked mixed reactions online. Some criticised the airline for miscommunication, while others noted Gimpo’s closer proximity to Seoul’s city centre compared to Incheon. A few joked that passengers should be thankful the aircraft had not landed in North Korea.
The onward flight to Incheon departed two hours later, and all passengers eventually arrived at their intended destination.
